Hi Shaina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My parents hosted house parties growing up. And Father was the DJ, while my mother cooked all the food. I started making personal mixtapes at the age of 7 by recording songs on mix shows from 99JAMZ and private underground radio stations. I was in drumline in middle school playing every percussion instrument I can handle. The keyboard & xylophone were my first two instruments I loved to play on. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every road isn’t easy. The music industry never gave women a fair chance. Being in a male dominated environment, “being seen” as a DJ was a challenge in itself. I was a flyer girl, I was a promotions girl. Underground radio personality & radio intern. Female DJs like Spinderella, Cocoa Chanelle , Kaye Dunaway or Dimepiece were inspirations for me to keep going. Believe in my dreams to be a turntablist and DJ .
