Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber McWhorter.
Hi Amber, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My photography journey began before I officially started Amber McWhorter Photography. I’ve always been drawn to the art of storytelling and preserving moments, but it wasn’t until I took photography classes in college that I realized I wanted photography to be more than a hobby—it was something I truly wanted to pursue.
What started with photographing friends and families quickly grew through word-of-mouth referrals and a genuine passion for connecting with people. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of documenting everything from engagements and weddings to maternity sessions and growing families, creating lasting memories for clients during some of the most meaningful seasons of their lives.
Today, Amber McWhorter Photography serves couples and families throughout the Tampa Bay area and beyond. My approach blends a documentary style with gentle guidance, allowing moments to unfold naturally while ensuring clients feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. Whether I’m photographing a wedding day, a family session, or a milestone moment, my goal is always the same: to document genuine love, laughter, and connection in a way that feels authentic and timeless.
As both a photographer and a mom, I understand how quickly life changes and how important it is to preserve the moments that matter most. Being trusted to tell my clients’ stories is something I never take for granted, and I’m incredibly grateful for the relationships and experiences this business has brought into my life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most small business owners, my journey hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Building a photography business takes much more than taking photos—it requires wearing many hats at once. There have been seasons where I’ve been balancing photographing weddings and sessions, spending long nights editing, managing client communication, marketing on social media, bookkeeping, and still trying to be present for my family.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to grow a business while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. As a wife, mom, and business owner, there are always competing priorities, and finding time for everything can be difficult. I’ve also had to navigate the ups and downs that come with entrepreneurship, from slower booking seasons to learning how to price my work confidently and invest in my business.
That said, every challenge has helped me grow—not just as a business owner, but as a photographer. Each obstacle has taught me something valuable about serving my clients, refining my craft, and building a business that reflects who I am. Looking back, those struggles helped shape the photographer and entrepreneur I am today, and they’ve made the successes even more meaningful.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My style is rooted in storytelling, with a strong focus on capturing genuine emotions and authentic moments as they naturally unfold. While I provide guidance when needed, I want my clients to feel comfortable enough to be themselves, allowing me to document real connections rather than forced poses.
Over the years, I’ve become known for creating a relaxed and enjoyable experience for my clients while delivering images that feel timeless and meaningful. Whether it’s the joyful chaos of a family session, the anticipation of a proposal, or the emotional moments shared on a wedding day, my goal is always to preserve memories that can be treasured for generations.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. Many of the couples and families I photograph return year after year, allowing me to document multiple chapters of their lives—from engagements and weddings to maternity sessions and growing families. Being invited back to capture those milestones is one of the greatest compliments I can receive.
What sets me apart is my commitment to both the experience and the final images. I approach every session with a blend of professionalism, empathy, and genuine excitement for my clients’ stories. As a wife and mother myself, I understand how quickly life’s moments pass and how important it is to preserve them. I don’t just take photographs—I create an environment where people can relax, connect, and make memories, resulting in images that feel authentic, emotional, and uniquely theirs.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe the quality that has contributed most to my success is my genuine care for the people I photograph. Photography is about much more than creating beautiful images—it’s about building trust, making people feel comfortable, and preserving moments that matter deeply to them.
I’ve always approached my business with a client-first mindset. I take the time to get to know my couples and families, understand what’s important to them, and create an experience that feels personal rather than transactional. That connection allows people to relax in front of the camera, which ultimately leads to more authentic and meaningful photographs.
Another characteristic that has been essential is perseverance. Building a business takes patience, consistency, and a willingness to keep learning and adapting. Whether it’s improving my craft, navigating challenges, or balancing the many responsibilities that come with running a business and raising a family, I’ve learned that showing up consistently and staying committed to my goals makes all the difference.
At the heart of it all, I think success comes from combining passion with genuine care for others. When people know you are invested in their experience and their story, it creates relationships that extend far beyond a single photo session.
