Life & Work with Luz Jimenez of Tampa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luz Jimenez.

Hi Luz, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My love for photography began when art felt like the only way I could express myself.

At fourteen years old, I moved to a new country without knowing the language. Like many teenagers, I was already navigating the challenges of growing up, but starting over in a completely unfamiliar place brought a different kind of loneliness. Photography became a way to communicate when words felt out of reach. It gave me a sense of belonging, purpose, and connection during a season when I often felt misunderstood.

What began as a creative outlet quickly became a lifelong passion. More than twelve years later, photography is still one of the most meaningful parts of my life.

Today, through Sonder Photography, I have the privilege of documenting some of the most important moments in people’s lives; from intimate courthouse weddings and elopements to couples, families, and celebrations. Every session is a chance to preserve a story that deserves to be remembered.

Photography has always been about connection for me. It allows me to see people as they are, celebrate their stories, and create images that help them remember not only how a moment looked, but how it felt. Every time I pick up my camera, I am reminded of why I fell in love with photography in the first place: its ability to make people feel seen, understood, and remembered.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.

There was a period when I stepped away from photography because I simply couldn’t afford the equipment and tools I thought I needed to be great. Looking back, I regret putting my passion on hold, but it taught me that fear and self-doubt can be bigger obstacles than a lack of resources, because I didn’t need to be great, I just needed to be.

Eventually, I decided to take a leap of faith and pursue photography again. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m the owner and photographer behind Sonder Photography, specializing in couples, courthouse weddings, micro-weddings, elopements, families, and commercial photography.

I’m known for my approach and willingness to go above and beyond for my clients. I truly love what I do, photography is both my passion and my creative outlet.

I’m most proud of building this business while balancing a full-time bartending career. It often feels like I’m always working, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What sets me apart is my ambition. I’m never fully satisfied with my work because I’m always looking for ways to grow, improve, and create something even better. There’s always another goal to reach.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I travel to Tampa often for work, and one of my favorite things about the city is the variety it offers. From waterfront views and historic architecture to vibrant downtown streets, there are so many beautiful locations that make every session feel unique.

If I had to pick one thing I like least, it would probably be the traffic, but that’s a small tradeoff for everything the city has to offer.
