Hi Karol, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Florida Animal Rescue Alliance (FARA) was founded after a series of animal rescues revealed a larger need within the animal welfare community, not just for rescue, but for collaboration, support, and sustainable solutions. What began as helping individual animals quickly evolved into a broader mission of connecting rescues, sanctuaries, advocates, veterinarians, and volunteers to strengthen animal welfare efforts across Florida.
Since our founding, FARA has grown into a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit and statewide alliance dedicated to supporting animals in need, with a primary focus on farm animals while also assisting cats and dogs when resources allow. Through our sanctuary network, volunteer programs, educational initiatives, transport assistance, emergency support, and community partnerships, we work to ensure that both animals and the organizations caring for them have access to the resources and connections they need to succeed.
Today, FARA serves as a bridge between people and organizations united by compassion, helping build a stronger, more collaborative animal welfare community while creating lasting impact for animals throughout Florida.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road.
Like many grassroots nonprofits, we started with passion, determination, and a desire to help animals, but very limited resources. One of our biggest challenges has been balancing the growing need for rescue and support with the realities of funding, volunteer capacity, and available placement options for animals in need.
We’ve also learned that animal welfare is rarely just about rescuing an animal. It often involves navigating complex situations involving shelters, sanctuaries, veterinarians, government agencies, and community members, all while trying to find the best possible outcome for the animals. Compassion fatigue, burnout, and the emotional toll of witnessing neglect, abandonment, and suffering are challenges that many in this field face, and we are no exception.
At the same time, every challenge has helped shape who we are today. It reinforced the importance of collaboration, which is why FARA evolved into an alliance-based model focused on supporting rescues, sanctuaries, advocates, and volunteers rather than working alone. We’ve learned that lasting impact happens when organizations work together, share resources, and support one another.
While the road has not always been easy, the animals we’ve helped, the partnerships we’ve built, and the community we’ve created make every challenge worthwhile.

Florida Animal Rescue Alliance (FARA) is a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit dedicated to building connections and creating solutions for animals in need. While we primarily focus on farm animals, we also assist companion animals and support wildlife efforts through our network of rescue partners.
What makes FARA unique is that we don’t operate as a traditional sanctuary. Instead, we serve as an alliance that connects rescues, sanctuaries, veterinarians, advocates, volunteers, and community members to ensure animals receive the support they need. We specialize in rescue coordination, sanctuary placement, transport assistance, volunteer engagement, educational outreach, and providing resources to organizations working on the front lines of animal welfare.
We are known for stepping in when animals have nowhere else to go and for helping bridge the gap between organizations that may not otherwise have the resources or connections to assist. Whether it’s coordinating a multi-state transport, helping place farm animals into accredited sanctuaries, supporting community cat initiatives, organizing volunteer events, or providing humane education opportunities, our focus is always on collaboration and long-term solutions.
What we’re most proud of is the network we’ve built. Over the years, we’ve developed relationships with sanctuaries, rescues, veterinarians, and advocates who share a common goal: creating a better future for animals. Through these partnerships, we’ve been able to help countless animals while also strengthening the animal welfare community as a whole.
What sets us apart is our belief that no organization can do this work alone. Rather than working in isolation, we focus on building alliances, sharing resources, and empowering others. By bringing people together around a shared mission of compassion, we can create a much greater impact than any one organization could achieve on its own.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
One of the things we appreciate most about Tampa is its strong sense of community and its connection to a vibrant network of animal welfare organizations and sanctuaries throughout the region. The Tampa Bay area is surrounded by incredible sanctuaries and rescues that provide lifelong care for animals while also educating the public about compassion and responsible stewardship. Having access to these organizations creates opportunities for collaboration, resource-sharing, volunteerism, and positive outcomes for animals in need.
We also appreciate the community’s willingness to support local nonprofits, whether through volunteering, fostering, donating, or simply helping an animal in need. That spirit of compassion is what allows organizations like ours to continue making an impact.
If there is one challenge we would like to see addressed, it is the ongoing issue of animal homelessness and the strain it places on shelters, rescues, sanctuaries, and caregivers. Like many growing cities, Tampa continues to face challenges related to pet overpopulation, access to affordable veterinary care, and the resources needed to support animals in crisis. As the need grows, so does the importance of supporting the organizations working tirelessly to care for these animals.
Overall, we are grateful to be part of a region that values collaboration and compassion, and we look forward to continuing to work alongside the many rescues, sanctuaries, businesses, and community members who are helping create a better future for animals.
