Daily Inspiration: Meet Tenille Drury Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenille Drury Smith.

Hi Tenille, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my college journey with the dream of becoming a veterinarian, driven by a lifelong love of animals and the sciences. Like many people, however, I discovered along the way that life has a way of reshaping our plans. While working my way through school, I found myself in the retail world—and it was there that I realized how naturally I connected with people. Sales and customer service came easily to me, and I recognized that my strengths aligned beautifully with a career centered around communication, leadership, and relationship-building.

After gaining valuable experience in various retail management positions, I returned home to Sebring in 2004. That transition led me into business-to-business sales and eventually into a sales management role at the historic Kenilworth Lodge. My years there helped me refine my ability to promote local assets and build partnerships within the community.

From there, I stepped into a sales role at the newly opened Highlands County Fair Convention Center—today known as the Alan Jay Arena—where I had the opportunity to contribute to the growth of a major local venue.

My next chapter took me to the Sun ’n Lake Improvement District as the Community Services Director. This position sparked a profound shift for me. It was where I first became deeply engaged with community development and where my involvement with the Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce began, initially as a board member. I discovered how fulfilling it was to be part of something bigger than myself—working collaboratively to enhance the quality of life in our area.

After several years, I transitioned into roles within home health sales and later marketing with a local real estate company. Although I gained valuable experience, I felt a sense of misalignment and knew I hadn’t yet landed in the place where I truly belonged.

That changed when I joined the Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce as President and CEO. At the time, I was already serving on the board, and I realized that this position encompassed everything I loved about every role I had held—community engagement, leadership, relationship-building, promotion, creativity, and service. It was the perfect fit.

Today, I can confidently say that serving the Greater Sebring community is not just my career—it is my passion. I love this community deeply, and I am committed to fostering its continued growth, success, and sense of unity. Every day, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the place I call home.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my career has been overcoming the perception that a four-year degree is the only path to leadership or success. With a two-year degree, I often felt the need to prove myself twice over—working harder, pushing further, and continually demonstrating that my abilities, dedication, and real-world experience carried just as much value as a traditional academic path.

Rather than seeing this as a setback, I used it as motivation. Every position I earned and every responsibility I took on helped build a foundation of practical knowledge, strong relationships, and hands-on leadership that ultimately shaped who I am as a professional. I’ve learned that experience, integrity, and a willingness to grow can be just as powerful—if not more—than any credential.

I am incredibly proud of the path I’ve taken. The challenges pushed me to rise, adapt, and excel, and they made reaching my current position even more meaningful. My journey is proof that passion, hard work, and commitment can open doors—and that success is defined by what you contribute, not just the degree you hold.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In my role as President and CEO of the Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce, I focus on building strong relationships, supporting local businesses, and fostering a thriving, connected community. I specialize in community engagement, organizational leadership, and economic development—bringing people, ideas, and opportunities together to strengthen our region.

I’m known for my ability to connect with others, advocate for our business community, and approach challenges with creativity and collaboration. Whether it’s organizing large-scale community events, supporting entrepreneurs, or partnering with local leaders, I’m passionate about creating positive momentum and helping our area grow in meaningful ways.

What I’m most proud of is the impact I’ve been able to make by leading with heart. I truly love this community, and I’m proud that my work reflects that—from championing local businesses to holding events that foster a strong sense of community. Knowing that my efforts contribute to Sebring’s success and future is incredibly rewarding.

What sets me apart is the path I took to get here. I didn’t arrive through a traditional route; instead, I built my career through hands-on experience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to service. My journey has shaped me into a leader who is approachable, grounded, and driven by relationships rather than titles. I show up authentically, listen intently, and work tirelessly for the people and places I care about—and that personal investment is at the core of everything I do.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in this role is that true leadership is rooted in listening. When you lead a community-focused organization, you quickly realize that progress isn’t achieved by having all the answers—it’s achieved by understanding the needs, concerns, and ideas of the people you serve. Taking the time to genuinely listen builds trust, strengthens relationships, and often leads to better solutions than anything you could develop alone.

I’ve also learned the importance of adaptability. Every day brings new challenges, unexpected changes, and opportunities that require flexibility and creative problem-solving. Being willing to pivot, reassess, and try new approaches has been essential to navigating this role successfully.

Above all, I’ve learned that passion and authenticity matter. When people see your genuine commitment to the community, they’re more willing to rally together, collaborate, and work toward shared goals. That sense of unity is what makes the work so meaningful—and what keeps me driven to serve.
