Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Wendy Thurlow of Bradenton

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Wendy Thurlow. Check out our conversation below.

Wendy , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I like to start my mornings outside taking a walk at a local nature preserve or yoga with meditation. These practices enhance mental clarity and help with decision making and problem solving in the studio.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a Florida based jewelry designer and maker. I have been producing one of a kind, custom and limited edition jewelry for about 30 years. I follow traditional methods of jewelry making. My pieces incorporate centuries old techniques with mixed metals, surface embellishments and high quality stones to produce jewelry that is both organic and sculptural. My work is inspired by subtle details found in nature and a lifelong love of world travel. Each piece is solely designed and crafted by myself in my home studio. I’m currently designing new work for the Adorn show taking place in February at Arts on Douglas in New Smyrna Beach.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
A diamond in the rough with unique potential. I have always been true to my authentic self. Free from limitations that come from society. Never feeling pressure to conform. Driven by passions, curiosity and a sense of wonder and possibility.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Many Times! It can be difficult to balance life, creative freedom, market demands, business aspects and recently physical strain from repetitive work. But at heart I’m a maker and could never abandon it. I realize I have a gift, not only to share with the world but with my local community. Aside from my own creative work, I guide others on their journey through jewelry making. Offering classes and workshops has opened up an outlet to share the magic with community and make a difference in other lives.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
Fads in Art and jewelry emerge quick and fade out just as fast. I have never been driven by hype or popularity, rather I follow my heart and creative expression. I stay true to hand crafted and thoughtful designs, not influenced by todays technology in my field. Foundational shifts are long lasting, hold value and are woven into the fabric of how my heart centered business operates. They may be less exciting but are consistent and allow me to work while bring true to myself. My jewelry is about creating true and speaks to my clients through authenticity. Thats what has holding power and can be passed down through generations.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I really feel most at peace when I get lost and immerse myself in my art and work. Trusting the creative process and getting into the flow of making. It’s almost a meditative state where all problems and the noise of the outside world fade away.
