We recently had the chance to connect with Scarla Mims and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Scarla, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Sometimes misunderstandings occur when some see the crystals and stones that adorn our candles. They assume the candles represent something that is not of God. But on the contrary, our inspiration to begin this business came when we began to seek God’s guidance. Most people do not realize that many crystals and stones are mentioned by name and utilized in the bible for God’s chosen people. In the book of Exodus 28:17, God gives instruction on which crystal or stone was to be used to adorn the breastplate for the priests. All of us at Miracles In Making Scnts have a strong sense of faith in God the Father and Jesus our Lord and Savior. And all of our candles contain a piece of citrine to enhance pure and clean energies only and a QR code label connected to the bible is under each candle lid. .
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Miracles In Making Scnts LLC or MIMS is a small, family ran business that makes hand poured candles from an eco-friendly coconut soy wax blend and uniquely blended phthalate and paraben free fragrances. Infused with all-natural products, wood burning wicks and beautifully decorated with crystals and stones, MIMS candles are mindfully crafted to enhance your senses in order to focus your mind and heal your soul. We currently carry 14 unique scent blends ranging from a eucalyptus mint, sage/vanilla or pineapple and strawberry. Each candle is made in an 8 oz tin, which ensures a safe burn whether lighting the wick or placing on a candle warmer to prolong the fragrance. And with an exceptional cold and hot throw, you can enjoy a MIMS candle and enhance any space in your home with our assortment of healing scents.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
When people exhibit behaviors that go against what God says a friendship or bond with others should look like, that relationship becomes broken. And that can manifest through a person who exhibits untrustworthy behaviors like gossiping, unforgiveness, unkindness, selfishness. Restoration occurs when we follow the instructions given by Christ to love your neighbor as you love yourself which can be found in the bible in the book of Matthew 22:39. It is the second great commandment given to help people survive our relationships with each other. To love someone as you do yourself means to forgive if someone has offended you, be humble and value others over oneself, and patience and kindness are all love languages that we can practice to heal any broken bonds in our lives.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear of failure. I have always been an overachiever, honor roll throughout high school, president’s list in college, the perfect student. I didn’t worry about failing then because I had all of the answers. But as I got older, I realized I didn’t have all the answers, not in life, not in running a business. I was not perfect and the fear of failing began to drive a lot of my choices. I couldn’t fail, what would people think of me, what would I think of myself? Failing meant I got it wrong and that I was not perfect. But one thing life has taught me is that you can only hold up that façade for so long because truthfully, no one is perfect. Failure will come whether its in the workplace, or even at home as you attempt to raise the perfect family. I had to learn to not fear the failure but to embrace it because failure can be the catalyst to success. Failure allows me a second chance to get it right because I’ve learned what went wrong. And as long as I am learning, I am living. Living for God and my family, facing each failure with anticipation that this time I will be get it right, that this time I will be successful.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My family. Family has always been the most important part of my life. So much so that family is the basis for each of our candle fragrances. Our 4Grands candle is named for the four grandchildren we have and its scent profile was created by their favorite fruit. One of our best sellers, RoseMarie, is a delicious blend of rose and vanilla and it represents the love my husband has for his grandmother (Rose) and his mother whose middle name is Marie. So, we’ve incorporated some aspect of family in every candle we have made.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yes. I spent most of my young adult life pursuing a career in Sonography. I wanted to be a part of the experience of showing an expectant parent first images of their unborn child. Once I achieved that goal, it wasn’t very long after working in the field for some years that I realized I was not satisfied. Although I enjoyed my patients, I wasn’t fulfilled because those hours spent at the hospital meant I was missing family time at home. Many holidays I missed or had to celebrate later because I was on call. When the opportunity came for us to launch Miracles In Making Scnts, I jumped at the chance because I knew I could get my time back with my family and still do something truly close to my heart, which still involved creating something with my hands. And this venture belongs to my family. It’s the start of our legacy and something we can all be a part of.
