Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Gebhard.
Hi Greg, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well super long story short, my wife and I moved to FL after playing music together for years. We bought a house and moved here to fix it up so that we could rent it out while we were on the road, but we loved it and stayed. We opened Nice Guys about 6 months after moving to SWFL.
When we moved here, there weren’t many places that we could go to and get interesting food and beverages. We originally tried to open a food truck, but fell into the restaurant instead. We worked from the absolute ground up, and used the skills that we got in the DIY music scene and applied it to the restaurant to help grow it to where it is today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely……..not a smooth road. The road is riddled with obstacles, but I feel like that goes with any small business. Just to name a few small struggles….. navigating a pandemic, hurricanes, a fluctuating economy.
We are EXTREMELY lucky to have the support that we do, though. We are in a much better place than most restaurants in our shoes because of our community. The community down here always shows up for us, and they show up when any member of the community needs it. I can’t stress how lucky we are.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think that we are known for being a bit different, and this is also what we specialize in. We don’t do anything the easy way, and we try to make sure that we always offer things that you couldn’t get anywhere else near us. We have some simple offerings, but we also have pizzas with Chinese Food ingredients and Peanut butter and things of that nature to keep it interesting.
I am most proud of the staff that we have built. They are all here for the right reasons, and they are the absolute best. We hire genuinely great people, and we train them the best that we can. We are a dive, but we care deeply about the service aspect. We put a lot of work in the care that we give to our regulars and guests, but we aren’t jerks about it.
Our staff sets us apart from others. Their personalities are all great, and they are what makes Nice Guys Nice Guys.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
COCKTAILS!! Our cocktail program is one of the best in our area, and I can say that because our staff is so creative. We go to different cocktail events around the country to learn from the best in the busiess. Our cocktail menu changes 5-6 times per year, so if you are into cocktails at all…. we’re the place for you.
We have a very interesting decor. We always strive to be the same environment as your cool uncle’s basement. Instead of posters, we have murals done by the great Jake Kelly. Our lighting is a little dim, and our music is a little loud.
