Today we’d like to introduce you to Gretchen Zwisler.
Hi Gretchen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Over the past two decades, I have dedicated my career to the field of hair color. My journey started in West Hollywood, where I honed my skills and expertise. Subsequently, I transitioned to Dallas, where I became a color specialist. My career then took me to Denver, and I returned to California, where I served as a color specialist in renowned salons catering to celebrity clientele in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. Six years ago, I relocated to Tampa with my nearly six month-old daughter, where I swiftly established a thriving business in South Tampa while balancing the responsibilities of being a full-time single mother.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In the world of successful business ownership and entrepreneurship, it’s inevitable to face ups and downs. What sets apart the accomplished from those who stagnate is their unwavering determination, relentless pursuit, and unwavering commitment to their goals.
Interestingly, the percentage of stylists who successfully complete their hair school education is significantly lower compared to those who achieve professional success after a decade of experience. I attribute my own success to my unwavering perseverance. After ten years of working behind the chair, I even took on the role of an assistant to a renowned celebrity stylist. While this decision may have challenged my ego, it turned out to be one of the most advantageous choices for my career trajectory.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In big cities like Los Angeles, New York and Miami, it is very common to find stylists that are departmentalized. Meaning they specialize in either cutting or coloring but not doing both. I chose to become a color specialist 18 years ago and I think that was the best decision I made because I continue to perfect my practice every day and my clients know thats all I do all day every day. I think that that makes me a better colorist, sets me apart from most stylists here in Tampa and gets clients more excited to sit in my chair for the first time.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
When I’m not behind the chair, I also assist people in curating their ideal beauty routine, encompassing makeup, hair, and skincare products, which is something I’m incredibly passionate about. Outside of the beauty industry, I enjoy producing a podcast that I created. It’s raw, unfiltered, fun, and genuine, covering all aspects of mom life, the political climate, and everything in between.
