Conversations with Shane Whitmore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Whitmore.

Hi Shane , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2003 my stepfather asked for me to move to Florida to help run the business with my sister. The company they had started had taken off, and he wanted to retire. I was an Electrician in the DC area ath the time and he had known I was growing unhappy with the daily drive, along with me being in DC on 9/11 and the DC sniper shootings that had happened.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I was able to finally make the move in September 2006, We signed a 5-year lease on a 10000 square foot building soon after I got here, and later that year the Economy crashed. I took the company over in serious debt with very few contacts in our small town. We struggled for about 5 years, working ourselves back into the green with networking and relationships developed. Englewood is unique with its demographics and is still one of the only handshake kind of towns left, so relationships and reputation are golden here more than most places.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In 1998, I was changing jobs as an electrician. I interviewed with Commercial Energy Systems in Frederick, MD, with one of the owners who became a big mentor in my life. As I sat across from him, he asked me where I wanted to be in 5 years and I responded by saying I wanted to be sitting in his chair. He smiled and said I was hired. A few years later, I moved into a Forman position with about 50 employees. I was awarded the DC subcontractor of the year award, along with many letters of appreciation for my work, making my salary grow with the company. I know that without his guidance and talks, I wouldn’t have the success I have been blessed with. Once in Florida, it took many years but my community involvement through coaching youth sports and the Chamber of Commerce managed to gain a good reputation and it has helped more than I can put into words.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
How people see me and how I see myself and complete opposites. Most people are hesitant to talk to me as I have a look that shows being Mad or upset. Once people speak to me they comment on how quiet and reserved I am.
