Conversations with Samuel Jacques

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Jacques.

Hi Samuel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So I used to edit videos of anime scenes and add certain rap songs that I thought would make the scene funny but also match the energy. I’d watch creators such as RDC, Rinnegoddess, and 5thraikage, and I always admired their content, thinking to myself that I wanted to pivot in that direction of actually being on camera. Being an awkward/shy person was something that I really had to battle with, even sometimes currently, my drive for wanting this to take off would overpower that shyness, and I just kept posting. I started on TikTok mostly because it was a pretty new app at the time, and no one from my city/school really followed me. I eventually got to a point where I wanted to take creating content seriously, and my girlfriend at the time encouraged me to do so. Quickly, it became a big passion of mine, and I started posting 3 times a day on there. My Instagram is where I only follow people from school or work, real-life encounters, so I wasn’t exactly comfortable with showing my full-on nerdy side over there. I then went to Dreamcon 2023 and got so inspired by all the creators I was around and knew that if I wanted to reach the heights that I want to, I’m going to just have to get over that fear. Since July 2023, I’ve been consistent in making my content and making sure I’m as creative as possible. I then branched out to streaming to continue my growth because I want to become a full time creator one day because it’ so fun and free. I genuinely enjoy making people laugh and giving them a moment of joy, just like the creators I looked up to did for me.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road in the slightest. When I was posting 3 times a day, TikTok wasn’t exactly pushing out my content, and I was starting to feel discouraged because I felt like I had some good jokes stuck at 200 views. I ended up deciding to pace myself with just one video a day to not burn myself out. My parents aren’t the most supportive and would constantly tell me that this route was a waste of time, but I can’t fault them because they don’t really understand content in general. If I’m not making money right now, it’s pointless, is how they view it. So the mental battle of not being where I want to be and them constantly speaking down about this has been extremely tough. Day in and day out, I have to remind myself that I have come a long way, even if they don’t see the progress. I’m now being interviewed for an article about myself, that’s crazy progress if you ask me! Also battling being quiet in social places because networking is a big part of elevating. Closed mouths don’t get fed and I’ve learned how to maneuver to companies and other creators to get my name and face out there.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For my day job, I just work in IT. Simply password resets or if someone’s computer malfunctions or if certain software is acting up then I just work on their ticket until they are good to go again.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Being from Miami, I love how there is always something to do here. I don’t go out much, but when I do, it’s always a good time. Spaces are super welcoming, whether it’s American, Caribbean, or nerdy culture, I’m able to feel at home. The only dislike I really have is how expensive it can be down here. Other than that, I’m super biased/delusional and think South Florida is perfect.
