Meet Clare Robbins of Tampa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clare Robbins.

Hi Clare, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I work as a portrait broker — a role much like an editor for portrait artists. Just as writers benefit from having an editor, artists too often need a trusted partner to help shape and refine the creative process. I serve as that bridge between artist and client, ensuring that each portrait truly communicates what it’s meant to: the essence of a person and the story behind the commission.

There are three primary reasons someone commissions a portrait: love, honor, and remembrance. People either wish to celebrate someone they love, to honor the achievements of an individual, or to remember someone dear. Each motivation creates a deeply personal collaboration, and it’s a privilege to be a part of that journey.

What I find most rewarding is the opportunity to work with extraordinarily talented artists from around the world — for instance, Paul Newton, who recently joined me from Australia — as well as with remarkable clients, whether families, corporations, universities, or members of the military. After years in this field, I’ve developed a discerning eye and an instinct for guiding the process so that every portrait captures both artistry and authenticity.

In short, my work is about connection — between people, stories, and the art that preserves them.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Covid! Can you imagine how impossible the shut down impacted portrait sittings- but we handled it ! We improvised my outdoor courtyard into a safe sitting area and even arranged a University Presidents sitting by Zoom.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
It’s deeply rewarding to help create art that will be loved and remembered for generations. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of assisting countless families — as well as leaders in business, academia, the judiciary, and the military — in commissioning portraits that honor legacy and capture the essence of a life well lived.

My path to this work wasn’t a straight line. I began in construction and land development, which taught me the importance of understanding the critical path — how to bring a vision to completion. That same approach applies beautifully to the creative process.

I first entered the portrait world as a client myself, which gave me firsthand insight into how valuable it is to have someone who can bridge the gap between artist and client. What began as a simple effort to help one artist soon grew into a career that has taken me across the country, collaborating with remarkable artists and clients alike.

I’ve had the honor of helping coordinate a portrait for the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. and organizing commissions that reflect both artistry and authenticity. It’s a privilege to help preserve stories through portraiture.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Give me the opportunity to work with them selecting the perfect artist for their project
