Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Marter.
Hi Joyce, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
For more than 25 years, I’ve had the privilege of serving others as a licensed psychotherapist, keynote speaker, and corporate trainer. My lifelong mission is to help remove the shame and stigma surrounding mental health and to promote greater awareness, access, and compassion for all. Early in my career, I saw firsthand how many people struggled to afford quality care, which inspired me to found Urban Balance—an insurance-friendly counseling practice that grew to more than one hundred clinicians across multiple states.
After guiding Urban Balance through years of growth and ultimately a successful sale, I continued my work as an advocate and educator. I’ve served in several leadership roles within the counseling profession and taught graduate students for over 15 years at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. My book, The Financial Mindset Fix: A Mental Fitness Program for an Abundant Life, has been translated into four languages and honored with eight awards—a reflection of my deep belief that mental and financial wellness are intertwined.
Today, through my company, Joyce Marter Enterprises, Inc., headquartered in Cape Coral, I have the joy of partnering with organizations worldwide to deliver workplace wellness keynotes and trainings on leadership, mental health, behavioral finance, and holistic success. My husband and business partner, Jason Marotzke—also a counselor and professional speaker—and I are grateful to work together while nurturing our blended family of four wonderful “adultings” who live across the country, along with our two beloved chihuahuas who keep life light and joyful.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a meaningful journey, but certainly not a smooth one. Like many entrepreneurs, I experienced seasons of tremendous stress and uncertainty—what I often call cash flow hell. In the early years of growing my counseling practice, Urban Balance, I had a vision for making therapy accessible and affordable. But there were many times when I was maxing out credit cards, delaying my own paycheck, and losing sleep wondering how I was going to make payroll for my team of therapists.
Those experiences were incredibly humbling. They forced me to confront my own fears, scarcity mindset, and money shame—things I had never learned about in graduate school. Over time, I realized that true financial health is inseparable from mental health, and that we can’t heal one without addressing the other. That insight changed everything for me personally and professionally.
The lessons I learned during those difficult years inspired me to write The Financial Mindset Fix, to help others transform their relationship with money, self-worth, and success. They also motivated me to expand my work as a contributor for Psychology Today and Forbes, where I now write about the intersection of mental health, leadership, and behavioral finance.
Looking back, I see those struggles not as failures, but as spiritual and professional growth spurts that taught me resilience, gratitude, and the power of leading with both heart and purpose. They have also prepared me to be of greater service and value to others.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Joyce Marter Enterprises, Inc.?
While I’m grateful that my work now reaches national and global audiences, some of the most meaningful parts of my career happen close to home and in the heart of our communities. Through Joyce Marter Enterprises, my husband and I are honored to serve not only large corporations, state and federal agencies, universities, unions, and professional associations, but also the small and mid-sized businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations that form the backbone of our economy and local wellbeing.
We understand that mental health and leadership development resources aren’t always easily accessible, which is why we offer discounted rates for Florida-based clients and community partners. It’s deeply rewarding to bring workplace wellness and behavioral finance programs to organizations that may not typically have access to this kind of support.
We’re also excited to continue growing our presence in Florida with upcoming presentations for the Wellness Council of Tampa Bay and the Florida Storytelling Festival—two opportunities that perfectly blend my passions for psychology, communication, and connection. Whether I’m speaking in a boardroom, a university lecture hall, or a local community center, my goal is always the same: to foster awareness, resilience, and compassion, so individuals and organizations can move from surviving to truly thriving.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the past several years, we’ve all been living through a time of chronic change and uncertainty. Economic instability, political divide, social unrest, and global conflict have taken a serious toll on our collective mental health. Rates of burnout, anxiety, and overwhelm are higher than ever—across industry. Now, with the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, many people are also grappling with fears about job security and the need to constantly adapt and up-skill while already feeling exhausted.
In the midst of all this, I believe the work we do has never been more essential. Through our keynotes and trainings, we help leaders and teams strengthen their mental fitness—the mindset, emotional intelligence, and self-care practices that enable people to navigate change and uncertainty with clarity, compassion, and resilience. These are the skills that will define success in the future of work.
One of our signature programs, The Infusion Revolution: Live, Lead & Succeed with Power + Heart, is about cultivating both the inner strength and emotional intelligence needed to thrive in the age of AI. As technology evolves, our uniquely human qualities—empathy, creativity, authenticity, and purpose—are what will set us apart. I see a growing recognition of this truth across industries, and I’m inspired to be part of this movement toward a more conscious, compassionate, and mentally healthy future of work.
