Today we’d like to introduce you to Gigi Espinola.
Hi Gigi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I founded Bay Academic Support after witnessing many bright, capable students struggling in traditional classrooms that required them to FAIL FIRST before offering support, and tutoring centers that weren’t meeting their unique learning needs. This can be highly damaging to young minds AND self-esteem. Early in my career, I worked closely with children who had dyslexia, ADHD, other learning differences, and the anxiety that it brings. I saw firsthand how the proper instruction could completely change a child’s confidence and academic trajectory. I find a combination of programs tailored to the student offers faster, more long-lasting results.
What began as one-on-one with a handful of students after school quickly grew into a full practice. Parents started referring friends, schools and psychologists began recommending us. Over time, I developed a team of highly trained tutors who utilize evidence-based approaches, including Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood-Bell, and other structured literacy and multisensory programs.
Today, Bay Academic Support serves students across Tampa Bay and beyond. We specialize in reading, spelling, comprehension, writing, math, and study skills, always with individualized plans that help each child feel capable and thrive. Our mission has remained the same from day one: to meet students where they are, unlock their potential, and provide families with hope and results that last.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. When I made the leap to start Bay Academic Support, it came after a big change at my previous workplace. The director I had been working under left very suddenly due to personal circumstances, and the transition was far more chaotic than anyone expected. I found myself having to make quick decisions, support families through the change, and build something stable out of a very uncertain situation.
While it was a challenging time, it also pushed me to grow as a leader and gave me the opportunity to create a program that truly aligned with my vision and values. Looking back, it was a pivotal moment that set the foundation for what Bay Academic Support has become today.
We’ve been impressed with BAY ACADEMIC SUPPORT, INC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Bay Academic Support was founded on the belief that kids who learn differently shouldn’t have to fall behind before they receive help.
What sets us apart is how deeply personal our approach is. One curriculum rarely meets every child’s needs, so we design customized and prescriptive lesson plans that draw from the most effective, research-based programs to meet each student exactly where they are. Our team is trained in many evidence-based and multi-sensory methods, which allows us to teach in ways that finally make learning click.
We’ve also created an environment where kids feel completely at ease; they take their shoes off, grab a cookie, and often don’t want to leave when their session is over! They refer their own friends, look forward to earning points and prizes, and most importantly, they associate learning with a positive, encouraging place.
We’re most proud of the trust we’ve built and the transformations we see every day. At its heart, Bay Academic Support is about building skills, independence, and self-belief so that school and life feel brighter and more hopeful for every child we support.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is progress: helping kids feel capable and confident in their own learning. Many of the students who come to us have spent years feeling like something is “wrong” with them because they compare themselves to their peers, and school has been challenging. Watching that self-doubt and anxiety melt away and seeing a child realize they ARE smart and CAN succeed is the heart of everything I do.
I also care deeply about giving families hope. When a parent walks through our doors, they’re often overwhelmed and worried; they’ve been everywhere and tried everything. Being able to say, “We see your child, we understand what’s happening, and we know how to help,” is powerful. Education isn’t just about grades; it’s about opening doors for a child’s future and rebuilding their confidence.
That’s why I’ve built Bay Academic Support to be more than a tutoring center. It’s a place where kids feel safe to make mistakes, learn, and grow; our parents feel understood and supported; and their child’s progress is real and lasting.
We love what we do. That joy spills into every session, and our students can sense it 🙂
