We recently had the chance to connect with Todd Laslo and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Todd, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
The art and paintings that I create are easy because I was born with a talent for it.That is not necessarily a true statement. While God did gift me with a talent for art, it’s is hard work and years of practice that can make it look easy. Hard work, practice, and dedication beat talent every day of the week.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Todd Laslo, and I am an artist from the Tampa Bay Area of Florida. I am originally from Ohio and moved to Florida in 2009. While in Ohio I owned a tattoo shop for a brief time and was the illustrator at Jo-Anne Fabric before coming to Florida.
Once in Florida I became a police officer up until 2017. Once I left the PD I returned to art full time. I began doing a lot of fan art, super hero stuff, sports figures, celebrities, ect… up until recently I began to re brand a bit, and started painting more fish and wildlife art.
So now that has been my main focus, and the direction I want my brand to go.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I would say the personal relationship I have with the Lord. I am a flawed individual, and that’s okay. I do my very best to be the way God wants me to be and to give him glory in all the successes and failures along the way.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I would say probably once a week, lol. I’m an artist, so we can be pretty hard on ourselves at times. I just have to remember, and I say this a lot, you have to Trust the Process, and discouragement is definitely a part of that process.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes the public version is pretty close to the real me. I love to engage and meet new people, but I can also be quiet and reserved. I am always observing and trying to learn new things.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I have already stopped doing this, and it has really helped me in my journey. I had to stop trying to figure out what I think other people will like as far as my art goes, and just paint what I want instead. I have my own personal style of painting, and I would hope that I and my brand will be known for that.
