Community Highlights: Meet Wes Pyburn of NASGRASS

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wes Pyburn.

Hi Wes, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are NASGRASS, (North American society of grass racers and sod slingers!)

I took over about 15 yrs ago when it was all but gone, something like 6 to 9 mowers and rebranded it from Florida lawn racing association to nasgrass. It was also in avon park at that time. I changed a few things, different thinking, and it began to slowly grow. 4 years ago we could not come to terms with a lease with the city and had to move to the Florida Flywheelers. They welcomed us with open arms and we got to work. Now, after building the new facility, into our 3rd season, we have doubled in size with 50+ mowers.

Non profit, family friendy, good old fashioned club.

We are on our 3rd season at the new facility located at 7000 avon park cut off road at the beautiful Florida Flywheelers park.

We have approximately 50+”mowchines” and 9 classes from wild to wild and ages 6 to 80!

Speeds start at 20mph and go all the way up to 70!

Food trucks, grandstands, tailgating on the backstretch and areas for lawn chairs make for a comfortable setting.

Our website is updated monthly nasgrassflorida.com

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, old track did not even have water to water the clay track, we used to pay a homeowner nearby for loads of water for the track and had to use our own vehicles to prepare the race surface.

Now we have our own track trucks and water at the new facility.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Very family oriented, 3 classes for young kids and the youngest have a kids class before practice starts on race day. They are called mini mow.

We put on a show for fun because at the end of the day, if you can’t laugh at yourself for racing a lawnmower at 50 mph and up….well, you have to laugh!!

Like I always say, you gotta see it to believe it!!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That I race myself and have traveled all over the country racing lawnmowers.

Pricing:

  • Grandstands $12
