Destiny Tavarez shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Destiny, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
What’s misunderstood about Desmaria Love is that people think it’s just another hair brand. It’s not. Desmaria Love was built from my own transformation and my mother’s legacy. It’s proof that curls can thrive when they’re cared for with intention, and that self-love is just as important as the ingredients in your products. This brand isn’t just about hair—it’s about resilience, culture, and reclaiming confidence.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Destiny, and I’m the founder of Desmaria Love, a hair care brand built to help people embrace their curls with confidence. This brand is part of my late mother’s legacy—she taught me to love and care for my hair, and that message of self-love is at the heart of everything we do. We make our products in the Dominican Republic, using natural ingredients and honoring the culture of hair care which gives them a unique authenticity you won’t find anywhere else. What makes Desmaria Love different is that it’s deeply personal: it’s not just about products, it’s about empowerment, culture, and truly celebrating your natural hair.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that has shaped me the most is the one I have with my boyfriend. He is the realest person on my team and has always been a huge supporter of Desmaria Love, constantly pushing me to do better and be better. Beyond that, he’s helped me discover parts of myself I didn’t know existed and encourages me every day to be my true self and fight for my dreams. He has truly shaped who I am today.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I started turning my pain into power after my mom passed. Grief is often described as love with nowhere to go, and for me, that love had to go somewhere—I poured it into creating Desmaria Love. Through building this brand, I was able to honor her legacy, channel my emotions, and create something that helps others embrace their natural hair and feel confident. What began as grief became a source of strength and purpose in my life.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m completely committed to Desmaria Love, but it’s bigger than just the products—it’s about spreading self-love. I’m not stopping until girls truly love their hair, every curl and coil, and accept it as a part of who they are, part of their identity, part of what God made them with. It’s not just hair—it’s confidence, it’s pride, it’s embracing yourself fully, and I’ll keep pushing that message no matter how long it takes.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I knew I only had 10 years left, I’d stop self-sabotaging and seeking love or approval that isn’t real. I’d stop overthinking and doubting myself just because I’m young and entrepreneurship is hard without a guide. I’d put all my energy into Desmaria Love, trusting myself, and fully committing to my purpose—helping people embrace their natural hair and their worth, just like my mom taught me.
