Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Meg | Violuna Southern of Mostly St Pete!

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Meg | Violuna Southern. Check out our conversation below.

Meg | Violuna, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Oh, I love this question. The first 90 minutes of my day are very sacred to me. When I open my eyes my cats are there ready to greet me, after some morning snuggles with them I get up and make my bed. I make a cup of warm lemon salt water and get my cats fed. I then sit and journal while sipping on my water. Typically I’ll get a little bit of mobility and movement in after that. Then I’ll tidy up my cats’ breakfast bowls, as well as do a quick vacuum of the house (I have three cats after all, definitely need to vacuum daily lol!). Then I’ll start to prepare my breakfast and coffee to get ready for the rest of my day!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Absolutely! I’m Meg ~ sometimes I go by Dr. Meg, sometimes Luna, and on stage I go by violuna. I’m a violinist and DJ based here in St Pete. I started playing violin when I was 6 years, begging my mom to let me learn so I could play Irish fiddle music with my friends. I was classically trained and earned an undergraduate degree in Music. After graduating, I took a bit of a pause from playing violin and ended up going to chiropractic school. That’s a whole other story there, lol. Life eventually took me to St Pete. I rediscovered my love for playing violin when I joined the Sacred City Kirtan band…which led me to playing violin with different DJ’s and eventually led me to becoming a DJ myself. What really makes my sets unique is the fact that I play live violin! I just recently had the opportunity to play support for Hayden James, which was such a dream as he’s one of my favorite artists. Currently, I’m working on learning production and creating my own music. I see big things on the horizon!

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My best friend, Pickle. He inspires me in so many ways and has had such a profound impact on my life. We met in 2012 at Nocturnal Wonderland where he gave me the nickname Luna. The love we have for each other is unreal. He doesn’t live here so I don’t get to see him as often as I like, but I know he’s always there no matter what.. When I can’t see myself clearly, he does ~ and that kind of love has been transformative. I hope everyone has someone like that in their life.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of being seen. Fun fact, my sun is in Leo, but growing up I never really resonated with it as I resisted the spotlight ~ I was incredibly self conscious. Lately, as I step into this bolder era, I’m discovering I actually enjoy it, lol. It still creeps in here and there, but I’m loving sharing my heart and cultivating spaces where others feel safe to share theirs too.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. I try to always be authentic. Something that might surprise some people is that I’m actually pretty introverted and incredibly shy. I enjoy being around people and I’m not really the type to start conversations. But if you come up to me, I’ll always have a moment with you!

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m out in nature ~ usually floating on my paddle board during sunrise… which I don’t do too often, but it’s such a special place. After that, I feel at peace when I’m DJing and dancing with a crowd! I’ll feel nervous until I get my first few songs in and then I’ll drop in, get lost in the music and fall into that place of flow… it’s so magical.
