Maura Fowler of Tampa Bay Area on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Maura Fowler shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Maura, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I got recently engaged in February 2025 and currently planning my dream wedding with my amazing fiance.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Maura Fowler, founder of Healthy You by Maura. I’m a registered dietitian who specializes in pediatric dance and sport nutrition. I grew up being a classical dancer most of my life and when I got older, I realized that there was a large gap between nutrition knowledge and learning how to build a healthy relationship with food. I work with families to encourage their child to build this healthy relationship with food, which ultimately helps them with their performance goals and helps to nourish their body through puberty. Since dance is an aesthetic art and sport form, it’s important that young dancers have someone who understands this lifestyle to ensure progress in their growth and performance goals.
Outside of dance, I enjoy helping families in general pediatric nutrition, from children in other forms of sports to children who may have a feeding tube. On occasion, I will also work with adults, helping them through chronic disease, weight loss, and muscle development goals. Overall, my goal is to ensure that my clients feel supported within their health journeys.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I struggle with this on a daily basis because I feel like it is still a part of me, but now that I am in my 30’s, I have been working towards releasing my desire to perform ballet. This is where my career as a dietitian came in and helped me understand that maybe my purpose goes beyond performance, where I can help support young dancers to reach their goals, while also keeping their mind and body healthy through appropriate nutrition.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
My fear is usually that I don’t “look the part”. This stems from my body dysmorphia as a young ballet dancer and tends to sit with me as a dietitian. I became a dietitian because I struggled with my weight and body image, and I never want anybody to go through some of the mental struggles I had, especially within such an aesthetic field, such as dance.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I deal with fads nearly all the time as a dietitian. There are so many fad diets that exist, that sometimes it can be confusing what is working and what is not. What I do on a daily basis, however, is remove that noise from my client’s mind, and focus on things that really matter, such as proven data. It is also important for me to be open to the fact that science is always changing and something that may have originally thought to be something, isn’t anymore.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
Traveling! There is so much to see and so many wonderful people to meet.
