Tameka Woods shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Tameka, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Yes! My most recent proudest moment was seeing a three-year vision that my husband and I had finally come to life: facilitating our first Essential Therapy Wellness retreat in beautiful, Montego Bay, Jamaica. For years, we dreamed, planned, and refined every detail from the location to the healing activities and to stand there, surrounded by the island’s natural beauty, watching guests immerse themselves in the experience we had imagined, was incredibly fulfilling. It wasn’t just an event; it was the manifestation of our shared vision, commitment, and belief in what we could create together. It made me proud not only of the retreat itself, but of the dedication, patience, and teamwork that made it possible.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Tameka Woods, and I am the co-founder of Essential Therapy Wellness Center, alongside my husband, Kendel. Together, we are passionate about creating spaces where traditional wellness boundaries are transcended, and healing knows no limits. Our mission is to provide holistic experiences that nourish the mind, body, and spirit, helping individuals reconnect with themselves, find balance, and embrace a life of vitality.
One of our most fulfilling accomplishments has been the launch of our Essential Wellness Retreat in beautiful, tropical Montego Bay, Jamaica — the manifestation of a vision three years in the making. This transformative, all-inclusive experience offers guests a sanctuary to step away from daily demands and immerse themselves in restorative practices like sound bowl healing, art therapy, meditation, and nature-based excursions such as the Martha Brae River and Luminous Lagoon.
What makes our brand unique is the intentional blend of cultural richness, holistic modalities, and community connection. We believe in creating not just an event, but a life-changing journey where participants leave feeling renewed, empowered, and deeply connected to themselves and others.
We are also thrilled to announce our new partnership with Whiterock Montego Bay, where together we will provide ongoing holistic wellness activities for our guests. Whiterock Montego Bay and Essential Therapy share a synergistic vision of facilitating a holistic experience for all those who desire such a journey. This partnership is a harmonious exchange of activities and services, intentionally crafted to promote health, balance, and whole-person wellness for travelers and locals alike.
In addition to our retreats and collaborations, I am excited to be releasing my upcoming self-love and life reflection project, “The Roots Within”, which explores the power of self-discovery, inner healing, and personal transformation, planned to be published in 2027.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The defining moment for me was enlisting in the military right after high school, which marked the beginning of my journey into adulthood. I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to meet people from so many different backgrounds, cultures, traditions, and religions. While I always knew that we are all loved by the Most High, my experiences taught me to appreciate the uniqueness of others and deepened my understanding of humanity. This journey has shaped me into a well-rounded individual.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I’ve carried many wounds/burdens throughout my life, some from the disappointments of others, and others from challenges within myself. My true healing began when I learned to extend the same grace I so freely gave to others and turn it inward. Through wisdom and experience, I realized I didn’t have to be perfect or take myself so seriously.
As I leaned deeper into my spiritual gifts, building upon the foundation of my Christian faith, I started releasing the thoughts and patterns that no longer served my growth and vitality. I abolished taboo, and did research to get to the root of some of my behaviors and beliefs systems. I release all judgements. The Most High reminded me that I AM unique, I AM enough, and I AM loved.
I lead with my heart and pure intentions. Those who disappointed or betrayed me, I have forgiven, and I’ve also forgiven myself for the times I compromised my own boundaries. Healing, I’ve come to see, is an ebb and flow, a rhythm of giving and receiving. I embrace that I am not perfect, but perfect within my imperfections and again seek to understand others within their journey.
Forgiveness, faith, perspective, and LOVE have become my strongest tools for healing.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
When I think about the difference between fads and true foundational shifts, I see it as the contrast between waves and tides. Fads are like waves, fast, flashy, and often exciting in the moment, but they eventually crash and fade away. They tend to rise out of hype or novelty, offering surface-level appeal without creating real depth or transformation. We’ve all seen them; viral challenges, quick-fix diets, or buzzwords that sound inspiring but disappear as quickly as they came.
Foundational shifts, however, are more like the tide. They move steadily, reshaping the shoreline over time. These shifts are sustainable and enduring, often born out of a deep need to solve real problems. They don’t just capture attention; they change behavior, culture, and even systems. The internet is one such example, as is the rise of telehealth in healthcare, or the integration of mindfulness in wellness. These are not passing trends, but rather they are movements that transform how we live and engage with the world.
The way I tell the difference is by asking myself a few guiding questions: Does this solve a real problem, or is it just riding hype? Will this still matter five or ten years from now? Is it adding lasting value, or just temporary excitement? And perhaps most importantly, is it becoming integrated into the way we think, work, and live or is it just being marketed to us?
For me, that’s the heart of it. Fads create a spark; foundational shifts create a fire that keeps burning.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The story I hope people talk about me when I’m gone is not one of perfection, but of purpose. I want them to say that I lived with heart, that I showed up with authenticity, and that I poured love into the spaces I entered. I hope they remember me as someone who created connection, whether through a word of encouragement, a moment of laughter, or a presence that made them feel seen and valued.
I want people to say that I carried both strength and softness, that I walked with faith even when the path wasn’t clear, and that I used my gifts to lift others higher. That my life was a reminder that healing, forgiveness, and love are not just words but daily practices.
Most of all, I hope the story told is that I left people better than I found them. That in some way, big or small, I sparked hope, inspired courage, or reminded them of their own worth. If that’s the legacy that lingers, then my life will have been a story worth telling.
