An Inspired Chat with Leslie Joy Ickowitz of Clearwater

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Leslie Joy Ickowitz . Check out our conversation below.

Hi Leslie Joy, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: When was the last time you felt true joy?
I feel true joy almost daily. Even in the darkness, I try to find light and that’s where joy hangs out.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Everything I do creatively is an expression of love and appreciation. My journey has taken me to unexpected places with several sparkling facets along the way. In 2009, I created the fashion and lifestyle magazine, VERTICAL Tampa Bay. During its trajectory, I also became the Style Editor for Creative Loafing and an on-air fashion correspondent with CBS. Following a trip to Cuba, I emerged as a celebrated artist and photographer. I have been honored with solo exhibits at The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa, The Studio@620 in St. Petersburg, and Dunedin Fine Art Center. My penchant for vivid storytelling fits beautifully with my life philosophy… to fall in love and to share it with others.

Recently, I discovered a new passion for art journaling. It brings me joy every day.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was Leslie Joy and I remain Leslie Joy. Fortunately, no one told me who I had to be. I find myself and I find my way everywhere I go.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Two Things:

A botched tonsillectomy during my senior year of high school, which derailed every part of my life and even affected my fundamental being in the aftermath. Growing up, time and perspective have helped me heal but the greatest act I did on my own behalf was to appear on live television for four years speaking publicly, despite a speech impediment and childhood ridicule that still haunt me.

Losing my father. It has been almost 11 years and for the 10 year milestone, I took myself on a healing spiritual sojourn to commune with nature and with him. I no longer struggle with trying to make sense of this world without him. I am no longer traumatized. I have arrived at a special place where I can only smile when I think of him.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Thoughtfulness.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
Twirling with my imagination and the most beautiful supplies in my art studio.
