Greg Tomka shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Greg, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Mouse Trap obstacle… labyrinth maze… mini golf crossbow… no, none of these.
It’s the Mr. Putters’ team. While yes, technically you “see” them when you walk in the doors at Mr. Putters. It’s the things they do when nobody is looking that continually remind me how lucky I am to have such a great team. I probably don’t tell my staff enough how great they all are.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Mr. Putters Miniature Golf
Mini golf like you’ve never seen before. On our three 18-hole indoor mini golf courses, you’ll putt through fun-filled adventures and mini games like mouse trap, pinball, skee-ball, and pool tables. And that’s only some of the holes on the Green Course.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My dad. Not necessarily about what the work is per se (my dad is a retired banker and I can only skim the surface of what his day to day job was). But more importantly, the WHY. And the why is simple. It’s for your family – which is the impetus for everything I do in in regards to Mr. Putters Miniature Golf.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Initially, I though to say to my younger self “Get over it.” Then I re-read the question and realized it said one “kind” thing to say to myself. Realizing I’m harder on myself than anyone could possibly understand, I’d actually try to convince my younger self that everyone makes mistakes. Yes, even you, young Greg Tomka. You make mistakes and it’s what you learn from your mistakes that matters.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
Everyone should have at least one commission-only sales job in their lives. You learn a lot about yourself when it’s you and you alone who determines how much food you put on the table.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Watching Youtube… I say that but who knows if that’s actually true.
