Jennifer Trevino shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Jennifer, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Yes, definitely. I’ve always been someone who pushes hard in life and expects results when I put in the effort. But there have been times when those results didn’t come as quickly as I wanted. At first, that was difficult, because I’m naturally driven to keep moving forward. But by staying the course and not rushing to force an outcome, I’ve realized in hindsight that those delays were actually a gift. For example, when I was building my practice, I initially expected it to grow quickly in one direction. When that didn’t happen, I kept persevering and stayed open, and it ended up allowing me to branch into client support and clinic management. Those are opportunities I never would have imagined for myself if everything had gone ‘according to plan’ in the beginning. Looking back, I’m truly grateful I didn’t act too fast, because the unexpected path turned out to be much richer than the one I originally envisioned.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jennifer Treviño, and I am the owner of Functionality for Life, LLC. I am an Occupational Therapist by training, but more importantly, I believe Occupational Therapy should exist wherever people can benefit from it, not just in hospitals or clinics.
That belief is what inspired me to start Functionality for Life: to bring therapy, support, and meaningful strategies directly into the spaces where people live, age, and thrive. At Functionality for Life, LLC, we believe that aging should not mean losing your independence, your joy, or your sense of purpose. We provide in-home, outpatient occupational therapy services for adults who want to maintain their quality of life, no matter their age or ability.
Our approach is proactive and holistic. We care for the whole person: body, mind, and soul. Through personalized therapy, home safety recommendations, and dementia care, we empower our clients and their families to keep living life on their terms.
We know that every day has meaning, and sometimes all it takes is the right support, adaptive strategies, or a little help from equipment or modifications to make that possible. That’s where we come in, to teach, support, and guide you toward greater independence and confidence.
We’re proud to be expanding our services into Generations Club Adult Day Center, offering specialized care through the new Medicare GUIDE program for individuals living with dementia, while continuing to serve clients throughout the Tampa Bay area, including Pasco, Hillsborough, and Pinellas counties.
Our mission is simple: to help you believe in your ability to keep living the life you love.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think what often breaks the bonds between people are things like lack of communication, unspoken expectations, and broken trust. When those build up, distance naturally grows. But I also believe bonds can be restored. It takes an open heart and an open mind; a willingness to really listen, to communicate honestly, and to give time and space for rebuilding. Trust doesn’t come back instantly, but with consistency, empathy, and openness, relationships can become even stronger than before.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me something success never could, that I am capable through my own abilities, even when everything feels lost. In many parts of my life, things came fairly easily, but it was through hardship that I learned what it means to truly succeed and earn it. In my lowest points, I realized I had nothing to lose, which gave me the drive to act, to push forward, and to make it happen because there was no other choice. That experience gave me a deeper sense of gratitude. Gratitude that doesn’t just come from outcomes, but from belief, action, and the consistency it takes to create real change. It taught me resilience, perspective, and a strength I wouldn’t have uncovered through success alone.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the industry tells itself is that healthcare is only about helping others. While caring is at the heart of what we do, the truth is that healthcare is also a business. Finances, rules, and productivity demands all affect how care is given, and sometimes those pressures can overshadow the human side. For me, the challenge, and the opportunity, is to stay focused on helping people while also navigating those realities with integrity. When we accept both sides, we can create systems that serve patients and providers better.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I think what I understand deeply, that many people don’t, is empathy, true empathy. Not just sympathy or feeling sorry for someone, but the ability to sit with people where they are, without bias or judgment, and really see their experience. For me, empathy isn’t about fixing someone or rushing them to the outcome I think they should have. It’s about creating space where people feel safe, understood, and respected, even when they’re at their most vulnerable. That level of genuine concern and care changes relationships, whether in healthcare, leadership, or even in everyday life. And I think too often people underestimate just how transformative that kind of empathy can be.
