Story & Lesson Highlights with Dimitris Gazonas of Pinellas County, Clearwater, Florida

We recently had the chance to connect with Dimitris Gazonas and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dimitris, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?

I start my day with a tall glass of ice-cold water and step outside for five minutes to breathe in the fresh air — your brain needs oxygen first thing in the morning, and it’s honestly the best natural boost I’ve found. I’ve experimented with early wake-ups, gym sessions, meditation, and journaling, but nothing has worked as consistently for me as ice-cold water, fresh air and sunlight.

Once I’m at my desk, I tackle the hardest, most brain-intensive tasks first. I believe in using the morning hours for technical or challenging work because your brain’s prefrontal cortex — which handles focus, problem-solving, and decision-making — is naturally more alert and less fatigued in the early part of the day.

I almost always skip breakfast and eat after 11 a.m. I’ve noticed it keeps my mind clear and helps me stay sharp through the most important stretch of my workday. I typically drink coffee after I’ve been awake for several hours, and I’ve found I never get that dreaded mid-day crash when I have it later — it’s like a steady boost to keep me going throughout the day rather than a jolt in the morning.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Dimitris, I partner with businesses 1-on-1 and help them grow with digital marketing. I run Direct Contact Marketing LLC, a boutique agency that specializes in generating consistent, high-quality leads for scaling businesses.

What makes us special is that we don’t just “set up ads and hope for the best.” We truly partner with our clients — we dig deep into their goals and map out the best course of action to achieve them. That personal attention and consulting is what sets us apart. Of course, we also know the technical side inside out — conversion tracking, data analysis, campaign setup — so our partners actually understand what’s working, what’s not, and how to scale profitably.

I started this business because I saw too many owners stuck in long-term contracts with big agencies that didn’t provide the support they needed, wasting money on ads that didn’t convert. I knew exactly why those things didn’t work — and how to fix them. Now, my focus is on helping business owners get clear, measurable results without the ghosting or guesswork.

When I’m not working on client campaigns, you’ll usually find me testing new strategies to promote my own business, sharing what I learn on social media, or finding ways to make marketing feel a lot less overwhelming — and a lot more human..

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
The hardest working people I know gave me the best lessons in life and work — my grandparents.

I’m a first-generation Greek-American, and I was always very connected to my homeland in Greece. I basically grew up there for a part of my life, surrounded by the hardest-working people I’ve ever known, even to this day.

Both of my grandparents are now in their 90s and they’ve always embodied the principles of hard work and resilience. They are poor farmers who still tend to their farm, crops, and animals to this day — well into their nineties.

Growing up, I watched them, day after day, tend to their responsibilities. But what really opened my eyes was that they didn’t do the hard work because they “had to” or because they were bored — they did it because, in their circumstances, they didn’t have the luxury of choice.

They lived through some of the most tumultuous periods in Greece’s history: the Axis Occupation, the Civil War, a military dictatorship, a coup, and countless geopolitical tensions. Yet they never faltered — they stayed strong, worked tremendously hard, and provided for their families, even at the expense of their own freedom and comfort.

My grandfather always told me, “Never be afraid of hard work.” That simple lesson has stuck with me through every chapter of my life and career – and it continues to be a supporting pillar of my success.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes — many times. I think it’s a natural part of being an entrepreneur. Everyone feels like giving up when the going gets hard. But when those thoughts creep in, I always think back to my grandparents. They went through challenges I can’t even imagine — wars, occupation, dictatorships — yet they never gave up.

Remembering that helps me put my own struggles into perspective. It reminds me that my problems are temporary and solvable. I’ve learned that wanting to give up is really just my inner child throwing a tantrum, trying to hold me back from what’s possible.

So when that noise shows up, I don’t listen. I take a breath, scale down the problem, and get back to work. The key is to stay focused — and to never be afraid of hard work.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I regularly rely on other ideas and outside perspectives, especially in areas I want to learn and improve on. In my field, it’s necessary to stay on top of technical updates — like algorithm changes — as well as macroeconomic shifts that could affect my clients and my own business.

Since I’m focused on my day-to-day work, I make it a priority to tap into the expertise of others in areas I don’t fully understand yet. I regularly speak with other marketing agency owners and business owners to exchange practices, ideas, and strategies to grow.

I believe success leaves clues. If you’re perceptive enough, you can spot what’s worth adopting and what’s just noise. Foundational shifts tend to have real substance — they solve a problem, improve efficiency, or create real value that stands the test of time. Fads, on the other hand, usually fade away once the novelty wears off.

So I listen, I test, and I watch closely. I pick up on what to implement — and what to avoid.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I strive for this every day. As a black belt and martial arts practitioner for over 15 years, my path is guided by one core principle: “True victory is victory over self.”

It was instilled in me at a young age that the battle you fight within is the most important one. What you do in the shadows determines what shines in the light.

Praise has never been my goal. My focus is always on bettering myself — my mind, my body, and my spirit. I believe you should work just as hard when no one is watching as when everyone is.

If anything, I actually feel more pressure when someone is watching — so staying focused on my own path works out perfectly in the end!
