Kierra Wilson on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kierra Wilson. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Kierra, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Who are you learning from right now?
I’m in the season of learning from myself. Becoming pregnant, I am in the most transformative state of my life, and it has opened my eyes to the fact that it’s just me. If I don’t do it, it won’t get done, and it has to get done. There’s no option not to.

So with that, I’ve learned boundaries, become more confident in myself, and trust in my instincts despite the obstacles or opinions.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kierra, and I am your favorite Content Developer. I curate, capture, and edit content of various forms, such as graphics and video, to provide quality marketing to my clients. This journey has been about 5-6 years in the making, starting as a self-taught Graphic Designer, and has evolved into a Content Coach and the founder of a soon-to-be Marketing Agency.

2024 was a huge year for me in terms of stepping into my content bag, and I grew my following to 15K followers as I’m genuinely learning and perfecting my skill. I recognized a new purpose in that process, which pushes me to keep developing and sharing the knowledge.

My experience has led me to offering in-person content sessions for local businesses, video editing services for clients out of state, as well as Social Media Management. I pride myself in providing the best for my clients and being their one-stop shop.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Being a young black child in a military household, I feel like I was always told what I had to be, inside and outside of the home. There’s a stigma as well as a level of expectation society places on you at a young age. If you don’t take these steps in life, you will be considered a failure, and there was a time I believed it.

I cannot tell you about a time of who Kierra was before the world told me what I had to be, but I can tell you when Kierra started telling the world who she was. I was in college, discovering myself as many do during this time, and I took the steps to start my first business. A dream I had for so long, I made it come true, and that’s when I became confident out loud about my talents and abilities.

It was also during this time that I attended a predominantly white college, staff included, and I began to see the divide in cultures and sexes. I felt different from my peers, and I was also looked down upon by my professors. Some of them couldn’t believe a young black woman could be smart or go anywhere in life. Although it was hard to face, and it seemed like no one could sympathize with my experience, my rise started then.

Fast forward 8 years, I’m in 2024 reflecting on the obstacles I faced and admiring the platform I built for myself. I didn’t allow people to tell me I wasn’t a Graphic Designer because I didn’t get a degree or use Adobe. I didn’t allow people to minimize my business to a little hobby. And I didn’t let the overwhelming fear of judgment stop me from pursuing what I loved, which was creating.

No, I’m not sitting at a corporate desk, but that doesn’t equate me to a failure. I decided I was going to be my own boss, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering teaches you to be grateful for what you have, as well as who you have. You can lose quicker than you gain, and it’s the hunger and constant motivation of showing up daily that reminds you of your purpose. Showing up for you is the best thing you can do to get through and back on top. Not friends, not family, you.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
What the public sees is the real me. Of course, I keep some details private, but other than that, I really am a joyful spirit that loves to be silly, talk to you like a friend, and care for strangers.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m “in my own little corner, in my own little chair.” It doesn’t take much to make me happy, just the simple pleasures of life. Whether that’s dancing around the house with headphones on, or on set with a client. I live by the rule of do what makes you happy, because if you don’t, you’ll regret it.
