We recently had the chance to connect with Yma Betancourt and have shared our conversation below.
Yma, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Honestly, the thing I’m most proud of building that most people never see is my family. I just had my second baby, and I keep my personal life as private as possible on social media but it’s the heartbeat behind everything I do. They’re the reason I push through long days in chiropractic school, late nights creating content, and all the sacrifices in between. My family keeps me grounded, motivated, and constantly striving to do better.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Yma, a Puerto Rican chiropractic student and content creator behind @theprchiro. My page is a mix of real student life, curly hair care, wellness tips, and relatable moments that make people laugh and feel seen especially busy women juggling a lot. What makes my content unique is that it blends my journey in chiropractic school with my personal passions, so it’s educational, inspiring, and still lighthearted. I love showing an inside look at what it’s like to study chiropractic medicine while being a mom, creating content, and staying true to my culture. Right now, I’m working on growing a space where people can learn something new, feel encouraged, and have a good laugh all in one scroll.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I always wanted to be a doctor, and I believed that was the one and only thing that defined success for me that if I just worked really hard, I would achieve it and that would be my whole story. Now I know that while I will finish my doctorate, I can also be so many other things along the way. There’s no single “right” way to live life and no strict timeline we have to follow. I’m learning to enjoy the process pursuing my chiropractic degree while also creating content, exploring my passions, and truly living life in the moment.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that’s held me back the most has been how introverted I am and the constant worry about how people might see me or what they might think of me. For a long time, that fear made me hold back from expressing myself fully. Strangely enough, social media has actually helped me overcome that. It’s taught me to share my voice, connect with people authentically, and stop letting negative comments hold weight. At the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their own opinion but that doesn’t mean every opinion is worth carrying with you.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Family without a doubt. As a Puerto Rican, family isn’t just important, it’s the heart of who we are. It’s the Sunday lunches that turn into all-day gatherings, the loud laughter that fills every room, and the way we show up for each other no matter what. Our traditions, food, music, and even our resilience all stem from that deep connection. No matter how busy life gets with chiropractic school, content creation, or any other goals I’m chasing, protecting that time with my family is non-negotiable. They’re my foundation, my biggest cheerleaders, and the reason I keep going.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
I’ll regret not doing anything that brings genuine love and joy to my heart because life is too short and moves too fast to ignore what truly makes you happy. For me, that also means taking the time to enjoy what I’m doing in the moment, not just focusing on the finish line. Sometimes we forget that the journey itself is just as important as the destination, and I never want to miss the beauty in the process.
