We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kanika Johnson. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Kanika , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
One of the things I’m most proud of building, that nobody really sees, is my ability to create stability and opportunity for my family while pursuing my passions. Over the years, I’ve quietly built a foundation that lets me balance being a wife, mother, student, and entrepreneur. It’s not flashy, but it’s the countless small systems, routines, and sacrifices I’ve put in place to keep everything moving forward. I’ve built a life that reflects my values: resilience, growth, and creating comfort for others. It’s not something the world sees day-to-day, but it’s the reason I can show up, create, and keep moving toward my goals.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kanika Johnson. I am a self-taught chef, entrepreneur, and founder of Kanika’s Homemade Kitchen and Catering and The Kurvy Chef lifestyle brand. My passion is creating simple, fresh, and homemade comfort food that makes people feel at home, while also inspiring women to embrace confidence, balance, and success in their own lives.
My catering business grew from cooking for friends and family into serving events, intimate gatherings, and busy households, all with a focus on soulful flavors and personal connection. With The Kurvy Chef, I’m expanding into food, beauty, and business empowerment content by sharing recipes, self-care tips, and entrepreneurial insights, especially for women juggling multiple roles.
What makes my work unique is the heart behind it. I don’t just serve meals; I create experiences and stories around food that connect people. And I don’t just build a brand; I share my journey openly so others can see what’s possible when you combine passion with perseverance.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Both of my parents taught me the value of hard work. My dad was a country boy. He had us up at the crack of dawn, and to this day I still get up before everyone else. My parents really showed me that hard work isn’t just what you do it’s how you live.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me things success never could. It showed me how to survive when everything feels like it’s falling apart, how to keep going when you’re tired, and how to find small sparks of hope in the darkest times. That’s why I created The Kurvy Chef, for women who feel stuck, overlooked, or unsure of their next step. I know what it’s like to carry the weight of family, bills, and self-doubt all at once. I wanted to build a place where we can cook, talk, and rebuild our confidence together where food is comfort, but the real dish we’re serving is empowerment.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
One truth that’s so foundational to my life that I rarely say out loud is this: no one is coming to save you, you have to save yourself. That doesn’t mean you can’t have support or love from others, but the real change, the real shift, always starts with you deciding to take the first step. I’ve learned that mindset, discipline, and faith are what carry you through, even when circumstances aren’t ideal. That belief shapes how I live, how I raise my kids, how I run my business. Once you realize your power, you stop waiting for permission and start creating your own path.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I think my customers would miss the personal touch the most. Yes, they’d miss the food, but more than that, they’d miss how I make them feel seen, cared for, and at home. Every event I do is personal, no matter the size. I like to think that I create moments. That connection, that feeling of comfort and love on a plate, is what they’d miss the most.
