Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Norman.
A Tampa native, Ali moved back to the area three years ago and began teaching printmaking at the University of Tampa. After collecting and restoring printing presses for years, she decided it was time to open a studio to provide equipment access to emerging artists and local makers. Her dream was to create a creative community space for people in the neighborhood to learn, make, and show their work. Labyrinth officially opened its doors in October, 2020 and provides workshops and studio time for people looking to expand their skills or continue projects. The gallery space up front hosts a retail area where handmade goods and gifts can be shared with the public, and provides a space for openings, events, and more!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening an art studio during a pandemic was definitely a strange journey! There have been ups and downs, but the love and support we have received from the Seminole Heights community has been incredible. Trial and error has brought us to a happy place where we can safely share the love of creation with the local community.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in Intaglio, or the traditional art of copper etching! I love the infinite possibilities that stem from this beautiful historic process. My ideas usually flow from dreams or meditation, inspired by a personal narrative symbolism. The use of machinery rescued from junk yards, closed shops, and dead artists is integral to my work and my desire to keep these analog techniques alive.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Spreading the creative community love! I am so excited every day to see people make work, learn new things, and tap in to their artistic side. The retail shop side is also so great because we give artists the opportunity to show and sell their works to the community. Our little gallery is a great place to find locally handmade gifts and goodies for your home.
