Rising Stars: Meet Robyn-Leah Kelly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn-Leah Kelly.

Hi Robyn-Leah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I am from Brooklyn, NY and I started cooking at 9 years old. I grew up in a typical Puerto Rican household so at a young age I knew how to make collard greens, homemade baked macaroni and cheese, Spanish rice, empanadas, and many other traditional soul food and Puerto Rican dishes. I learned through years of experience that food is more than putting delicious ingredients together on a plate. Cooking is an art, and to me food is love. I moved from NYC to Tampa in 2015 with a dream in my heart and mind, knowing and believing one day I will be one of the most successful female Chefs. Brooklyn Style Cuisine breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Food is happiness.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all, you dodge hurdles and sinkholes all the time. Financial burdens come with starting a new business and well as maintaining a healthy mental stamina. I ask myself daily, “do you love being a Chef on the dark days?” I do a lot of catering events and private chef parties; I love my job even on the days I don’t book a family to feed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in Brooklyn Style cuisine. Bacon egg and cheese sandwiches, brunch items like Cajun Shrimp and grits, and Lala’s salmon cakes to name a few menu items. I also specialize in a variety of soul food dishes. I am most proud of how I handle my breakfast items; people deserve to have a good breakfast before they start the day. I have recently added dessert items to the menu as well; and if you are in the Holiday spirit, you can order Puerto Rican Coquito any time of year.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Cooking with my mother in our kitchen in Brooklyn and listening to all her favorite songs, is my greatest memory. Cooking for large gatherings of her friends and on the days, she trusted me to cook all alone, that was the ultimate confidence booster.
