Rising Stars: Meet Monte Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monte Lewis.

Hi Monte, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m from a small, country town in Alabama. I went off to college and played college football. I excelled and ended up playing professionally. I started off playing in the NFL, then Canada, and Arena football after that.

At one point in my career, I played here in Tampa. Even after my career was done here, I always found myself coming back, so I decided to make Tampa my home. I was a sports performance coach for about four years, which was an easy transition from football, but being a real estate agent was always in the back of my mind.

Although being an agent was something I wanted to do, I was a bit scared, and this is coming from a 6’4″ 265lb defensive lineman. After time went by, I finally took that leap of faith. I quit my full-time job, took my real estate course, and passed the state exam on the first try… and now I’m here.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
So far, it’s been pretty smooth, but I haven’t been doing this very long. After only having my license for a few weeks, I already have a listing, so I’m very excited about that.

I will say that getting leads feel like a struggle at times though. Just the uncertainty of not knowing when or if you’ll get one leaves you a little skeptical.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m definitely known for being an athlete. My whole life has been football. It’s been my career and how I’ve made a living up until now.

I’m most proud of doing what I’m doing and my parents being able to see it. They didn’t get the opportunities I got, so anything I do that makes them happy makes me happy. I’m proud of coming from my small, country town. When you come from small places like that, you not only represent yourself, you represent everybody.

A lot of people never leave there. For them to see someone coming from where they’re from is everything. Also, I’m very proud of being able to have a positive impact on the youth. I’ve always been told, “You never know who’s watching.” It’s such a true statement, especially when it comes to our youth.

Doing things that others complain about sets me apart from everyone else. I’m very resourceful as well. I credit that to growing up in the country and my dad telling me “There’s always a way.” Also, I will overcome any adversity thrown at me.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
Being an athlete, injuries always set you back.

Despite injuries, you meet a lot of people as a professional athlete, so it’s great for networking. Being bigger than the average person attracts attention. A lot of conversations are started simply because of my stature. Sometimes that’s good, but sometimes it’s not.

As an agent, I’ve been very lucky to have a very good friend who’s also an agent and my mentor.
