Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Dorr.
Hi Jason, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi, my name is Jason Dorr and I’m the director of a youth development program called More2Life (M2L). In 2006, I was working at my church as the youth pastor and the YMCA as a group counselor. While I enjoyed working with kids and teens, I wanted to do more with public speaking, specifically in the middle and high schools in my county. One day I was in my office and received an email from More2Life saying they were hiring. At that time I didn’t know anything about the program but, that email was calling me! I contacted M2L and they brought me in for an interview. When the director described how M2L goes into schools and talks to students about making positive choices and avoiding risky behaviors, I knew that this was exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I was hired as an educator conducting presentations, and in 2012 I became the director. I can honestly say I have loved every minute of my career with More2Life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In 2010, we lost federal grant funding which caused us to downsize our staff. The remaining staff and I were going month by month wondering if the program would continue. Miraculously, due to the generosity of donors, we were able to continue with our program and be self-sustaining. In our 22 years of service we have spoken to over 180,000 students.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The More2Life program provides a variety of different topics including: Goal setting, Drugs & Alcohol, Bullying and Conflict Resolution, Time Management, Social Media Safety, Building Healthy Relationships, Respect, Peer Pressure, and more. Each presentation includes an interactive game, activity, illustration, and videos to help students stay engaged. If there is a specific topic that a school or summer camp needs, M2L will create a custom-made presentation to help fit the needs of their students.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
In order to continue to connect with students, it’s important to be culturally relevant. As I get older sometimes it’s hard to keep up and I can become irrelevant very quickly. So as the culture is constantly changing it’s important to research in order to stay in tune with the culture.
