Rising Stars: Meet Jarixa Hampton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarixa Hampton.

Hi Jarixa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I come from a family of creatives. So, you can say it was in my blood. I used to draw a lot at an early age but after graduating high school, drawing didn’t do it for me anymore. Then came college, where I only went for 2 semesters and then dropped out. I was able to take ONE photography class, Black & White film to be exact. The concept blew my mind, we were only using black and white film and developing our own images in a black room. I always said when I bought a home it would have a black room in it. In my second semester, he course started to get more in-depth on the history of photography and I got bored. I didn’t care who created the first camera, I just wanted to shoot. Around this time my family was going through a lot so photography became more of an outlet for my anxiety and depression. Having the camera in my hands I feel like nothing or no one can hurt me. Fast forward to about age 24, bought my first Canon camera, the Rebel T3i. Started doing free shoots for anyone of anything. I watched numerous YouTube videos, attended online workshops, etc. Shot my first wedding in 2015, with my now-husband Wayne. It was only up from there. I was working a full-time job as a legal assistant and the weekends were for weddings and photoshoots. Just this past year I was finally able to quit my full-time job and take the business by its horns. So, there it is, a Jersey girl chasing her photo dreams here in Florida.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I suffer from severe anxiety and depression. There are days that I can’t even get out of bed due to it, but I try my hardest to pull through. We also moved from NJ to Tampa on our own where we have no family or friends, so not a smooth road but very grateful for the journey.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a wedding photographer primarily but also do product, family, maternity. I believe what sets me apart from others is my personality, I have social anxiety so I like to make jokes a lot, I always have an easy way of getting my clients to laugh and capture some really great candid moments.

What does success mean to you?
Success to me isn’t defined by a bank account, it’s more of what’s in one’s heart and soul.
