Rising Stars: Meet Dean Cooper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Cooper.

Hi Dean, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I grew up in Chicago, Illinois. Born to Belizean parents who came here in 1975 and had me in 76’. I had a rough upbringing but I always dreamed I could be something. I always loved music. My father would play his reggae and soca records for his friends but mainly for himself.

I’d collect all of his old music equipment and build my own sound system. This started my infatuation with music. It always spoke to me. Fast forward to 18, when I moved down to Florida with my Mom. I wasn’t in the best of situations in my teenage years, with all the gangs and drugs in those Chicago neighborhoods. My Mom decided to get us out of there and head down to Central Florida, Kissimmee to be exact.

Down here I found my stability, found my Wife, and created my beautiful children. I knew I wanted to do music for a living but I had to pay the bills, so I worked a lot in hospitality. It was 2012, I was a bartender at TGI Fridays and the manager comes to us and says “We are looking to have a DJ here on Sundays.” Without hesitation, I said “I DJ!” Knowing I didn’t have any experience or let alone any equipment.

She says “Great, you start next week!” I was excited and scared at the same time. But guess what, I made it happen. I manifested my dream to work on music. It didn’t start off pretty as the movies would portray it, but little by little I built myself up. Fast forward to today, I have my own DJ company and I have a record label. I also own a Janitorial company as well. I know the meaning of ask and you shall receive.

I definitely know the meaning of hard work. I’ve had ups and downs. I went through most of my life unknowingly asking for what I didn’t want. When I changed my focus to what I DID want then everything changed. Now my DJ business (We Are Entertainment LLC) is growing rapidly. Since 2020 our business has doubled.

We provide service for weddings, corporate events, resorts, and any other private parties. I’ve hired 2 DJs to work for me. I am looking to have 10 DJs on my roster by next Summer. My record label (Live Life Media Group) is preparing to release our first artist later this year.

Things are only going to get better. All you need to do is be positive and show love.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth? Lol. Some issues I’ve had are laptops crashing, speakers blowing out in the middle of weddings, start-up costs for equipment (very expensive), finding dependable people, and finding new contracts and new gigs.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I originally started my music career as a recording artist and producer. I’ve even had a music video lol. I’ve worked in a couple of studios in Orlando but I decided to open my own in 2018.

Now, I mainly focus on producing for my artist and brother Lord Kilo Toke. I also produce and write songs. I know within the next 2 years you all will be hearing and singing one of the many hits I have in my bag.

I love making music. I couldn’t live without it. That’s what sets me apart. My passion for life. Every day can be better than the last. Just stay positive.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Stay focused on exactly what you want. Don’t settle. It’s your life. It’s your future. It’s your movie. You’re the star of the show.
