Meet Tom Nguyen of Mr. Technique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Nguyen.

Hi Tom, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
At the end of October 2020, my wife and I moved to St. Petersburg from Atlanta, GA. I had lived in the Atlanta area for almost my whole life. I also moved my business, Mr. Technique, to Downtown St. Petersburg. Mr. Technique is a small business web design and SEO firm which has won several industry awards. I created a website for it in 2002 and had it incorporated in 2007. I have a small US based team (web developer, graphic designer, and assistant) which works remotely. For more on Mr. Technique’s history in Atlanta, check out my interview with Voyage ATL (http://voyageatl.com/interview/meet-mr-technique-west-midtown-30318/).

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been all sunshine and rainbows since I’ve moved down here. I had to deal with an automatic Google My Business (GMB for short) suspension when I changed Mr. Technique’s address and phone number. For about a month, Mr. Technique’s local website traffic was non-existent. For many local businesses, a suspended GMB listing can be debilitating. Luckily for us, we don’t depend on new business completely. Most of Mr. Technique’s business is repeat business from current clients.

Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, you cannot speak to Google on the phone about a suspended listing. To restore a suspended GMB listing, you have to submit a GMB reinstatement form. The process to restore a suspended GMB listing is extremely tedious. By following Google’s strict guidelines, I was able to restore Mr. Technique’s Google My Business listing, and it is now appearing for web design and SEO searches in St. Petersburg and some other cities in the Tampa Bay area. If you want to see the details of what I did, you can visit https://www.mrtechnique.com/reinstate-suspended-gmb-listing/.

We’ve been impressed with Mr. Technique, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Mr. Technique provides a variety of digital marketing services. Web design and SEO are our top two services, but we also offer web hosting, Google Workspace (formerly GSuite) management, domain name registrations, and website photography. There are other services that I can’t remember at the top of my head, but our clients usually end up using us for services that they didn’t know we could provide. I once pushed a bad article down a couple of positions on the first page of Google for a web design client to help out his reputation.

Most of the websites we build are built with WordPress, but we still custom code a few websites. Most of our clients are in the Atlanta area, but we have clients located throughout the United States, and we are starting to get new clients in the Tampa Bay area. Even with the pandemic going on, I still meet clients face-to-face whether it’s in Florida, Georgia, or even as far away as Arizona. My business is known for its personal touch. Although Mr. Technique is now located in St. Pete, I still travel to Atlanta every 6-8 weeks to visit any of our clients in-person. We have quite a few clients there, and it’s important for me to nurture those relationships.

We’re also known for doing quality work. My web developer, graphic designer, and I do things the right way, and we don’t cut corners.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
There’s a few things about me that probably shock the hell out of people.

I am fluent in Spanish. I can’t speak it like a native, but I can get by with just using Spanish in a Spanish speaking country. I once carried on a 15-minute conversation only in Spanish with a French woman in Spain who could speak French and Spanish but not English. I’ve been studying Spanish since 2013. I’ve also used my Spanish extensively in Mexico and Costa Rica.

People who work in my field aren’t so sociable, but I actually enjoy talking to people. Some clients even call me up to vent about the frustrations of their business. I’m like their bartender so to speak.

And, last but not least, I used to be a pro boxer and MMA fighter. I boxed on ESPN Friday Night Fights and I made Sportcenter’s Top 10 highlights of the day. That was a fun night. For almost 20 years of my life, I was always training in some kind of combat sport.
