Meet Barbara Ellis of The Stylish Chick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Ellis.

Hi Barbara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My grandma taught me how to sew and instilled the importance of personal style in me from a very young age. Fashion and style have been woven throughout my career. It started in high school in southern California when I worked at a high-end boutique helping pull together fashion shows and dressing the ladies who came from Los Angeles, including a few celebrities.

Over the years, I’ve worked in Sales, Strategic Relations, Fashion Merchandising, Textile Buying & Design, and Interior Design, plus I built a multi-million dollar sales organization with a social selling accessories brand, mentoring thousands of women to success over the last 11.5 years and helping thousands more with their personal style.

In early 2021, I visited a friend who had just started a House of Colour franchise and had her do a color analysis on me. My mom had taken me as a teen and I was told that because I had green eyes and freckles I was an “Autumn” and I held onto that belief for almost 40 years!! I wore all the earthy, warm colors of the Autumn season, wore rust lipstick, and dyed my hair red. I really tried to live up to it as much as possible.

When I went through the process with my friend last year, I knew two things immediately. One, the process was much more scientific than my original analysis, and two, I was undeniably a Winter! It was the start of a love affair for me with personal color analysis because the changes I saw in myself were immediate and dramatic – even though I have always been confident in my style this took it to a whole new level and suddenly things just clicked in my wardrobe.

Getting dressed became really easy, and I knew I needed to help more people discover the same for themselves. So in June, I opened House of Colour Tampa Bay to bring personal color analysis to this area. I can now help people with their overall style, including personal color analysis, makeup, jewelry, skincare, closet edits, shopping, and style analysis!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been smooth sailing to where I am now. I took some detours outside of my wheelhouse with opportunities that, while financially sound, didn’t fuel me as helping people with their personal style truly does.

And my husband and I have moved across state lines 5 times in the last 12 years, which creates a lot of obstacles. Even though I had my own accessories social selling business, I had to start over again with every move as I worked to establish myself in each new area. The upside to that is I now have friends all across the country!

We absolutely LOVE Tampa and are settled in here for the long haul, which is the reason I was able to open a House of Colour franchise! The color analysis must be done in person, so having a solid home base is important!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a style educator and help people with their personal styles. As part of that, I own House of Colour Tampa Bay through which I help people fall in love with their style, have more confidence, and save time and money through color and style analysis.

Personal color analysis is a scientific process to determine which colors work best for you and must be done in person, but my other services can be done virtually (or in person if you prefer)! These include style analysis (we look at your body architecture, personality, and lifestyle and give you guidelines for honing your personal style), makeup and makeup classes, skincare, jewelry, closet edits, seasonal updates, and personal shopping.

I am known for helping people not only determine their best colors, but educating them on how to incorporate them into their overall style including their highest impact and authority colors, plus the best hair and makeup colors, etc. It is not a transactional process for me, but the start of a relationship where I can be a continued resource for my clients over the years!

What do you think about happiness?
Helping others with their personal style makes me happy because I love seeing the confidence that emerges when someone is truly feeling not only pulled together but also showing up authentically!

Other things that make me happy are time with my family, discovering fun new places, being near water (especially the beach!), and tacos.
