Meet Arik Jourdon Hunter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arik Jourdon Hunter.

Hi Arik, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My mom put my dreads while I was in high school… eventually, people started asking me to do theirs, and basically most of my life the past 14 years, I’ve been doing new dreadlocks and loc maintenance as an occasional hobby for a bit, to doing it as a side hussle for a few years and now as a fully structured business.

I have a start up salon in Tampa and get booked to travel nationally and internationally giving people dreadlocks or fixing the locs they already have.. right now, I’m working out an employment system while also practicing my original curriculum in hopes to begin teaching my method to other individuals or salons!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No way. I started with nothing but a couple of hundred dollars to buy a website and new crochet tools… and started doing it at my mom’s house while I lived with her, but eventually, her HOA kicked me out for working there… so it started a public argument between a few people in the neighborhood and my mom & I.

Eventually, I lost everything and had to find a new place to live if I wanted to do hair so I started by hopping between Airbnbs for like 2 weeks while trying to buy this car so I could drive instead of walk… then I started to look for a house, seeing how I didn’t want an apartment again and needed something I could set up shop in.

While I Airbnb for the next 2 months taking clients at different Airbnbs to keep up income and finally spent the last of my money on closing costs in this house so I had to stop taking clients and sleep in my car for like 2 weeks until I got the keys to the house. And that was just like my first 4 months doing hair full time/starting the salon.

As you know, we’re big fans of Hunterlockx. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Professional Crochet dreadlocks (new dreads & maintenance/repair), loc extensions (hand crafting and installations), and original house made vegan&organic hair products (primarily for Dreadlocks).

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Keep grinding.
