Life & Work with Shawn Speidel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Speidel.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Unspoken was birthed in 2013 in the Philadelphia area with the goal of creating a clothing brand that delivered a deeper “Unspoken” meaning. Unspoken pulls inspiration from several street artists, particularly an artist by the name of Banksy whose spends his art career creating beautiful thought-provoking artwork pieces free for all to see on public locations. In the early days of the brand, we focused on “Graffiti” styled designs, as the brand grew, we went through several rebrandings to find our identity. Our identity is based around creating thought-provoking designs that give the consumer a chance to have a conversation about a subject that otherwise might go unspoken.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Anyone that describes starting a business or brand as a “smooth road” is lying. Starting anything new is going to have a learning curve with ups and downs. Some weeks will be better or worse than others, It’s a matter of mindset and passion. Let your passion drive your work ethic and let your mindset turn all your losses into lessons and you can’t lose.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Unspoken isn’t your typical clothing brand, we aren’t afraid to start a conversation about any subject. Our goal is to start conversations about “Unspoken” subjects to help us come to a better understanding of each other. We achieve this by creating designs that are deeper than what initially meets the eye. We strive to build a community around this idea of open-minded people that want to hear both sides of every story. We speak for the unspoken.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I think we all have learned a multitude of various lessons throughout the current pandemic. I think it was a great reminder for us to cherish our loved ones and those close to us and to never undervalue the importance of human connection and time together.
