Life & Work with Matthew Kuscher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Kuscher.

Hi Matthew, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started this journey with my wife and a dream. I worked the corporate restaurant world for 11 years before I made the leap to go solo. Opened LoKal in Coconut Grove in 2011 which was a farm-to-table concept with a focus on craft beer. In 2014 we opened Kush in a beer bar in the Wynwood area of Miami. In 2016 we opened Kush by Spillover which is our seafood concept and craft cocktails. In 2017 we opened Vickys House an ice cream and milkshake bar-themed after my mom’s house in 1986. In 2019 we reopened Kush by Stephens the oldest deli in Florida since 1954. We open La Cocina a cocktail bar next door the same year. In 2020 we opened Cafe Kush a bistro version of our Kush concept. In 2021 we reopened the oldest bar in Miami, Tobacco Road in the Brickell area. And most recently we opened Don’s 5-star dive bar in the MiM0 district, themed after famous Don’s from Miami in the ’70s and ’80s

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is smooth, it’s a lot of hard work, sacrifice, and doubt, but if you’re passionate about your goal and never lose sight of your integrity it will make the ride much easier.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are a restaurant group focusing on the subculture of Miami and being a translator of the unique language that is specific to this area. We focus on quality and service but also the details that most people overlook like urinal cakes, coasters, and dog menus.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Miami because we have our own language, it’s also a new city still writing its story and I love being part of that story.
