Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Clark-Hilery.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been a makeup artist for 22 years. My diverse background and experience creates a unique style accredited only to my artistic talent. As a child, I loved to paint and being creative in school as well as outside of school. As I got older, I began to get more involved in the artistic world where I was involved theatre in High school, as well as working in the field of fashion which gave me exposure to fashion shows and photoshoots.
I have always had a natural sense of style and different artistic ability. At the time of attending FIT as a fashion design major in New York, I began to think twice about my career. This milestone decision was while attending the Jean-Paul Gaultier fashion show in 1993 where I was backstage witnessing the creativity that the makeup artist were executing which was captivating.
I started on my journey of doing makeup on myself in Tampa, FL taking on an alter ego in the entertainment scene and making a name for myself for six years known for my over the top theatrical makeup. This also took me into my journey working in retail for 20 years working for M.A.C. Cosmetics (on and off), NARS cosmetics as a trainer. This journey helped to develop my skills as a professional makeup artist specializing in skincare, cosmetic application, Halloween/special FX, airbrush, and beauty educator.
I am an innovative artist with a creative eye who brings a professional attitude, a sense of fun, and impeccable attention to detail to every job. In addition to my broad range of talent and expertise, I bring dynamic qualities to my work, balancing professionalism, creativity with a sense of excitement.
With that being said this journey has brought me to a point where I created “GlamKings” which is a brand of limitless potential. We will be providing a variety of services such as Microblading, make-up artistry, etc.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is never smooth in any career path y0u are working towards. I’ve had to learn and grow in my artistry learning from other artists around me. Some of my struggles throughout the process was learning to have more self-confidence in my artistry. I think every makeup artist struggles with this in the beginning as they want to be successful, thorough and overall perfectionist who it comes to our artistry. Other struggles are being able to afford to get what you need to build your craft (e.g., Kit, supplies, etc.) Starting out is always the most difficult part of the process but once you find your niche then the rest can fall into place slowly but surely.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a celebrity makeup artist and for me, I’m aesthetic when it comes to makeup varies as I love to dabble in everything.
I specialize in:
Editorial Photo Shoots
Collaborative Photo Shoots
Film/Videography (Short Films)
My work has allowed me to show anyone that it’s not just about the beauty but the experience. I am very proud of all my work but most of all being featured on the cover of the French magazine “MALVIE” for doing the makeup of celebrity stylist “Pilar Scratch”. This opportunity was a surprise as Pilar is my niece and asked me to do her makeup but didn’t disclose what it was for. Being featured as the CEO and makeup artist on the cover was a tremendous honor. I think technique and skill are what set me apart from other artists. I am a firm believer that listening to every request and understanding what is being asked of you is most important. Then executing the request is where the artistry truly comes from.
What are your plans for the future?
I am always working on future plans to grow and elevate what GlamKings is going to be and at this time, I am working on something big which I can’t really discuss but I know it will be something to really make a statement.
