Life & Work with Hannah Martin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Martin.

Hi Hannah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Since I was young, I’ve always had a love for art. My parents even had me in art classes when I was in elementary school. I have memories of my parents letting me draw all over the walls of the homes they would rehab when I was about 4. Throughout the years my form of art has changed. In middle school and high school, I used to compete with dance. Having to learn how to do competition makeup, I found my love for it. In high school, I became a freelance makeup artist. I was doing makeup for homecomings, sweet sixteens, and weddings. My favorite part of makeup was always the brows. The brows were also the most complimented part of my makeup style. Within my friend group, I was always the girl that my friends would come to, to do their brow shaping. When I was 17, I left the country to live in South America to do missions work. I put my career plans on the shelf for 3 years and I would not have had it any other way. After getting let go from my job at a gym this past year it forced me to look at my path and made me decide if I should stay comfortable or follow my dreams. I chose to follow my heart and go to school and dive fully into Microblading. Since getting my certification I now make a living doing what I love. I am beyond blessed to now work in two locations here in Tampa Bay and in Pasco to serve a wide range of people. I get to wake up every day to create brows for my amazing clients. Giving these women the brows they deserve is such a heartwarming feeling.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I actually had a few challenges starting out. Overcoming myself limiting beliefs was a major one. I had to get over the fear of staying comfortable with my typical 9-5 job I had. For some reason, I felt that was I safe but in reality, that wasn’t guaranteed either. I could be let go at any time. And that actually happened to me. That was my realization that I needed to push forward and follow my dreams no matter how scary it was. When starting my brow business, I wasn’t working anywhere else. I wanted to devote all my time into building it up. I was worried about how I could get clients and how I would be stable financially. I had to have faith in myself and trust the process. I’m not going to lie it wasn’t easy. I gave back to the community by doing brows for free for about 3 months. I am thankful to those clients I did for free because it enabled me to show off my work and get more clients based off of referrals. Hearing people say they want to book with me because they love the brows I’ve done makes me feel that I accomplish something. It makes me feel that all the hard work and those moments I felt discouraged were worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in Microblading. I have been lucky enough to train with PhiBrows Academy. Microblading is a hyper-realistic style of cosmetic tattooing. The shape of the eyebrows is calculated according to facial characteristics. No stencils are used, the shape is created based on your facial measurements that are unique for each person. Hair strokes are manually drawn following the direction of natural hair growth. This technique will give you the most natural look and takes about 3 hours to achieve. After the first session, my clients receive a complimentary touch-up session once their brows have healed. After that yearly touch-ups are recommended to maintain the shape. Since I am with each client for 3 hours it allows me to make a personal connect with them. I have been very fortunate to have my clients share so much about their lives when they leave, I feel I have gained a new friendship in my life. My clients have shared beautiful moments with me about their lives, I’ve laughed and cried and bonded with each and every client after my sessions with them. Not only giving my clients badass brows but making a personal connection with them is just as important to me. I want them leaving my chair feeling empowered.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up as a child it took me time to warm up to people but once I did you could not get me to stop talking. I was a little shy at first but it wasn’t till I found dance that I was able to find my confidence within myself. Being able to live out of the country from 17-20 really molded me into who I am today. Being in South America I was in a country that didn’t speak English. They only spoke Spanish. I had to break through those insecurities and learn the language myself through the help of YouTube. Being able to give back to the people of Ecuador really changed my perspective on life. I would volunteer my time at a local orphanage. After seeing those kids so happy with the little they had made me realize I grew up having an amazing childhood. It also made my heart grow and let me live my life with more love for others.
