Today we’d like to introduce you to Cantrell Armani Malcolm.
Hi Cantrell, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my business in 2018, at this time I was 16 years old living in a group home. As I was placed in foster care at the age of 12. I had always had a love for doing hair, makeup, my nails and etc. Along with my hustle mentality, therefore, starting a business seemed like second nature for me.
I had been working jobs since I was 15 my goal in life has always been to make something out of myself. The sky is the limit! I use my pain and everything I’ve been through as my fire to never stop. I put the money aside and I spent $350 on my first inventory of lashes. From there 2018-2019, my business went from doing makeup to selling vegan glosses, lip scrubs, wigs, and hair extensions.
In May of 2019, I graduated high school in 3 years with horrors and a 4.0 GPA. Shortly after graduating, I was adopted at the age of 17. Began going to cosmetology school to do hair and nails. Selling my own inventory of hair, lip gloss, lip scrubs, and hair accessories while in my first year of college. I began to get burnt out from not giving myself enough personal time aside from work school and business.
On top of my life taking some changes for the better. Therefore, I decided to pause my business and college career for 6 months and it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do yet the best for me mentally and physically. MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS! Within those six months, it gave me time to grow as a person.
Grow my skills as a nail technician. Today, I’ve now been experienced 2 years as a nail technician. & am preparing to graduate early next year with my A. A. in business administration. My business may not be the biggest be the fact that I took something I loved and turned it into FOREVER income is substantially amazing!
I’m excited for the big things to come for my overall future and my future in nails!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road just like working a regular 9-to-5 job. Things are going to happen in your personal life but you still have to show up and do your job or you’re going to be without one. The same rules apply to your business. If you do not stay consistent if you do not show up if you do not give it you’re all.
YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE RESULTS. Everybody has struggles with their business, I feel that one of my biggest struggles, in the beginning, was negative/hateful criticism. I did not know how to accept that when I was a beginner nail tech still learning. Those hateful things at one point made me want to give up on something that I love to do & was a passion for me.
Yet still, I didn’t give up, I kept practicing and practicing. Still practicing to this day 3 years later. There’s always room to learn when you are in the beauty industry. The more your practice the greater you become, & the more attention you receive.
The best advice my mother gave me, people only talk about you when you’re doing something good!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in nails. Acrylic nails, Nail art, Pedicures. Anything nails I love it. I am most proud of my growth daily as a nail tech. It’s definitely a sight to see yourself blossom.
I feel that my eye for detail when it comes to my work sets me apart from others. Once I put my mind to something I’m going to do it until I get it right!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
My age, most people are shocked to hear I’m only 20.
