Life & Work with Albert J

Today we’d like to introduce you to Albert J.

Hi Albert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Maryland in the late 80s. I was blind as a child… But had vision restored when I was an adolescent. I played football through hs and got a full scholarship to play at VMI where I attended as a student athlete.

In played all the way until I was 23…

Then I tried suicide.

I was depressed… Had no direction after putting so much into something and being denied.

I was put into a psych ward.

I wrote my first song in that psych ward… And the therapy of guttural and honest expression through rhythmic poetry… I needed more of it.

10 years down the road… And I’m here.

I’m happy… Confident… Motivated and inspired to crush more barriers and limitations in my quest of creating love and emotion through music.

I was known as F.O.C.U.S. (forever on course until successful) … For the past 5 years, I’m known by my actual name… Albert J.

I’ve made a lot of music… Collaborated with many… Performed a lot… And traveled with my art.

My latest release” Mansion Music” with Psych Montano is available everywhere.

My story is about triumphing through failure… Attaining personal success and validation… And spreading that sentiment.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I had cataracts as an infant until I was 13.

Being blind amongst my peers was very debilitating as children are cruel.

I attended 9 different schools between 1st grade and graduation in 3 states. Though I learned to adapt… It hindered me creating or maintaining lasting relationships… Something I struggle with now.

I’ve been homeless… And a drug addict. That perspective is humbling and different.

I’ve overcome all of these things.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Embrace THE ENTIRE PROCESS… Not just the good.

Don’t be afraid to try new things and fail at them. That’s failing in the right direction.

Bet on yourself.

Never feel entitled to support or adoration. From anyone… That all takes time… Energy and money. Be blessed when you are supported and foster that support.

Invest in yourself… Save money
