Life & Work with Cory Van Valin of Oldsmar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Van Valin.

Hi Cory, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
People always ask how I chose the magic lifestyle. Honestly, I feel like the magic life chose me! I look back at many significant moments in my life and see signs that pointed to me to be a magician, and I didn’t realize that until I was already a performing magic! One significant moment was asking a girl on a Valentine’s day date in high school, so I went on YouTube and learned all these tricks, because I thought that’s how you impress a girl, with magic. HA! Well, I got called into work last minute and never went on that date, but I kept up with the magic tricks! I was blessed in the beginning of my career, when two days after quitting my 9 to 5 job, I accidently got booked to work at a Buffalo Wild Wings every Friday and Saturday, and a moment later got booked at The Lodge out in South Howard Tampa to perform on every Thursday. I shortly later got picked up by Club Detroit in downtown St Pete next to Jannus for every Friday and Saturday. It was through Buffalo Wild Wings where I got my initial experience, exposure, and financial security, and through the venues in Tampa and St Pete, I really started expanding my connections to a market of a whole horizon of people, all before 21 years old!

At the ripe old age of 21 was asked to open up at the Paris Casino, in Vegas for Anthony Cools, the longest running hypnotist on Vegas. There were years where I would go out to a new city or new venue six to seven days a week! I really started picking up exposure from people of all ages. Eventually, I started getting picked up from some very high-profile connections, which doing a good job with them resulted in a domino effect of other high-profile connections. My favorite thing to do isn’t magic necessarily, but my favorite thing is to say hello to strangers. You never know what a hello holds, and all it takes one day, one moment, one hello to a person, that can transform your life for the greater.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It honestly for the most part has been a smooth road. The Covid virus did have an impact on me and other performers as well, to perform in various venues, However, I was able to pivot well and make the most of it. my favorite mantra to think to myself is: “I’m at the right place, at the right time, right now.” I’m a true believer that when you do what you love, and share it with others, life can be harmonious. I personally see challenges and obstacles as something beneficial, so that I can handle it in the most productive way. My favorite quote from Jim Carrey is: “Life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you…” and I have faith that every misfortune has a seed of opportunity in it. I’ve always known to be happy and grateful for what I have/ where I am as I pursue everything I desire.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am more than just a magician and entertainer. I feel I am a magical person, who happens to be quite good at tricks 😀 About what I offer: I offer entertainment for private parties and events. Whether it’s an intimate house party with 10-15 people, or a large corporate event for 100-500+ people! When it comes to my performance, I can either provide strolling/close-up magic mingling with guests during a cocktail hour, or I can offer a 45-minute or longer comedy magic show for everyone to enjoy together. I would say my specialty can be easily seen in my close up mingling with guests. My talent isn’t necessarily just sleight of hand, but more of my ability to approach and connect with people, and give them a wonderful experience. I also host a headline stage show every two to three months, which is an 18+ comedic magic show. If you would like to be informed when and where my next stage show is, send an email to, and I will add you to the mailing list for my next show! What sets me apart as a person performing is that, I truly believe magic exists, and that it is all around us and within us. Any experience that gets us in a great state of emotion, where in the present moment, your mind is open and feels that anything is truly possible! My message while performing isn’t “look what I can do” but more- “look what WE can do”. When I experience every-day people breaking into smiles and emotions that they probably haven’t expressed in a while, that is something that is always within them, and my tricks and interaction just help pull it out.

I am a true believer that smiles don’t just result from good things. Good smiles result IN good things, and I am so grateful I have an art that can bring smiles to complete strangers. I am most proud of my ability to manifest my goals. I am a true believer of writing down goals and dreams, really feeling the emotion of achieving it, and then letting it go to the universe.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I look back and see so many factors and components, that if one element was off, I would not be where I’m at today being able to impact everyone that I have. The one major credit I have to give to, is to my Mom and Dad. They’ve believed in me when I had nothing to show for it, and have seen the potential unfold before their eyes. They have seen my journey unlike anyone else on this planet, and their support has been fuel to assist me launch 🚀 I’ve got to give credit in the magic realm to my local magic shop The Magic Emporium and my good friends and mentors in this area like Peter Diamond and Antwan Towner, who have given me perspectives at a young age from their experiences. As of lately, my team member and friend Robert Richards has been a huge role in helping me brand and build content, help turn ideas into reality, and give me unbiased counsel. Going full circle, everyone who has ever given me a chance to perform for them has contributed fuel to my gas tank to keep me flying!
