Inspiring Conversations with Kimberly Jefferson of Pretty With Purpose & Reborn Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Jefferson.

Hi Kimberly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

Today, I am a proud entrepreneur who is walking in purpose and passion! I have always seen myself as a leader and one who was commissioned to inspire and serve people in some way. As a little girl, I enjoyed playing school with cousins and thought I would be a teacher when I grew up. I ended up getting degrees in Social Work and Healthcare Administration. I worked in child welfare for several years and Corporate America in the realm of healthcare compliance and privacy. After nearly 13 years in Corporate America, I learned it was not for me. There was this yearning to do something different. Something that allowed me to control my days and not be controlled. I have always had an ear for listening to people when they were going through difficulties and providing sound guidance when solicited. In 2017, I made the decision to go to graduate school for the second time and earn a Master of Social Work Degree. This would allow me to later practice as a clinical social worker.

Also in 2017, my nonprofit, Pretty With Purpose, Inc. (PWP) was born. PWP is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that mentors girls ages 10-18 in the Tampa Bay and surrounding areas. Our basic tenets are working with the young ladies to improve their self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence. We focus on activities that educate them about who they are and whose they are. Additionally, tools that will help them navigate through life are also provided. While PWP was established in 2017, it was not launched until 2019 due to busy work demands. I completed graduate school in 2019 and became a Registered Clinical Social Worker Intern in Florida and launched my counseling practice in 2020, Reborn Counseling, LLC. Those ten and older dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and other life struggles are welcome at Reborn Counseling. Today is all about doing the work that God has called me to do. We do not always know what the journey will look like or how we will even get there, but we should never stop pursuing the journey. There may be many twists and turns along the way, but stay the course and it will all become clear.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I love that question! I do not know of any path that is totally smooth. Please let me know where to find it. Many of the struggles had to do with leaving a six-figure income to pursue things of the heart. You ponder many things. Am I making the right decision for my household? Will my businesses flourish? Will I make enough money to survive? Running a non-profit and a for-profit has challenges. The non-profit heavily depends on the generosity of others through donations and in-kind gifts. The for-profit is dependent upon clients, their consistency in their own treatment and healing journey, as well as their ability to pay. I am not one that is very shaken by my struggles. I have my moments, but I try not to linger in them. Nothing will change if I do not put in the work. The independence to practice as a therapist on my own without supervision in Florida is dependent upon passing a clinical licensure exam and obtaining a substantial amount of clinical hours. That process has had challenges, but this too shall pass.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Pretty With Purpose, Inc. (PWP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to mentoring today’s young ladies, ages 10 to 18, to meet tomorrow’s challenges. Our female-led mentors empowers Tampa Bay’s female youth by offering effective career and personal mentoring, coaching, one-on-one relationships, career skills and by fostering self-worth and wisdom in each of our participants. Our vision is to inspire, motivate and encourage young girls to set attainable goals, to believe in themselves and recognize their self-worth through mentorship and to facilitate faith-based activities and services that focus on helping young girls who are experiencing challenges in their homes, schools or community. PWP cares. I know that sounds cliche’, but our mentors truly go over and beyond for their mentees. They build relationships with the family. They utilize their own resources to pour into the girls. They are very invested and committed to being a positive in the lives of the young ladies we serve. We are building a community of girls. The girls form relationships with others. Some of them do not have friends but are developing relationships with other girls through PWP.

Who else deserves credit in your story?

My husband, who works so hard so that I can live out my purpose and passions is my number one fan. Watching how faithful he is and his love for providing encourages me to continue the journey. We have made tremendous strides and accomplished goals that many may never reach in their lifetime. He is an entrepreneur as well and understands the ins and outs of business matters. He is extremely analytical and strategically guides me. His leadership has not failed me yet!

My parents were hard workers and two of my greatest inspirations. They both worked 30+ years on the same job and sometimes multiple jobs. My dad, who is deceased, loved me so much. His infinite love inspires me to keep going and to love and give to others. My mom is a strong warrior. She does not back down! My strength, determination and ability to go in spite of circumstances definitely comes from her.
