Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Tinsley.
Alexis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began my freshman year of college at the University of Central Florida. I started as a journalism major and as a way to showcase my work and skill set to future employers, I decided to start a blog. Like most people, I had no clue what I was doing when I first started out. I spent most of my nights staying up late trying to figure out how to build a website. Eventually, I learned how to create my website and I began to notice that most bloggers in the industry didn’t just blog about lifestyle. They had a niche or a specific topic they would blog about the most that people knew them for. It didn’t take me long to figure out what my niche would be. Travel is something I would always be passionate about and plus I enjoyed writing about my travel adventures. Throughout my college experience, my blog and my social media content pertaining to it transitioned from just a travel blog to a budget travel blog and now a travel blog about Latin America. In my sophomore year of college, I decided to pick up a double major. I was told without my double major I was on the track to graduate at 19 years old. The thought of going out into the workforce at that age not receiving the full college experience terrified me! Picking up a double major allowed me to go to college for the full four years. I picked up Latin American Studies as my second major. I chose this major after learning I could use many of the credits I had with my first major towards it, I could take up to six language courses, and after being presented with the opportunity to study abroad in Peru! Taking on Latin American Studies opened up a new world of possibilities for me.
The following year, in 2019 I began to take my travel blog to the next level by diving into the influencer and content creation space. I began working with travel and lifestyle brands as an influencer and even getting paid for some of the campaigns I worked on. In that year alone, I visited a new city every month. I visited cities from Toronto to New York to San Juan to Cartagena. Once the pandemic hit in 2020, I was forced to slow down my travel blog and influencing hobby that was starting to turn into a business. I spent the first few of the pandemic panicking like most but eventually began to come up with creative ways to make the best of it, I noticed even though the pandemic is going on, brands were still operating and the influencer industry was still a thing. It was just remote instead. I was sparked with the idea to begin mentoring and coaching aspiring content creators on how I got to where I was today. From that moment, I rebranded Travel With Tinsley from being a Latin American travel blog to a creative communications agency where I provide aspiring content creators with the support and resources they need to build an impactful and profitable brand through social influence and entrepreneurship.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In the beginning, the road was not smooth for me. I spent countless nights trying to figure out the backend of building a website let alone a business. It began to frustrate me how there was not enough support out there for people like myself who were interested in getting into social influencing and content creation. I struggled with creating content. I thought I need to be the most experienced writer to create the perfect blog post and I thought it would take me 10+ years to create beautiful photo and video content. Then, I realized there’s no such as perfect. I am always going to want to get better no matter how good I became at it. The only way to reach that point is by starting and continuously practicing. A life-changing part of my journey is the day I started to invest in myself. I used to invest a lot of energy and time working on my craft but I didn’t start to see dramatic changes until I invested in my first business coach. Just like most, it was scary to put money into it and I wondered why couldn’t I just learn everything my coach was teaching me online for free. I learned that if I wanted to experience serious growth in business, I need personalized support. I could no longer consume “cookie-cutter content” because that’s what most of the resources on the internet were. It was information such as how to build your Instagram following in 30 days. It was not information such as how to build your Instagram following with an audience that is obsessed with the kind of content you create, whose lives you can leave an impact on, and who are more than ready to invest in your product and services. Googling and Youtubing did not provide me with the personalized support I knew I needed to skyrocket my business.
As you know, we’re big fans of Travel With Tinsley. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Travel With Tinsley is a communications agency on a mission to help creatives in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry grow their business and impact the world through social influence and entrepreneurship. We work with all types of creatives such as bloggers, photographers, videographers, influencers, designers, chefs, etc. What sets us apart is we are a brand that puts community first and leads with creativity and social influence. We believe in the power of social media being the next big thing. As a creative myself, I value creativity and always want to put our client’s vision and the legacy they see for themselves first. We offer a monthly membership program where provide newbies getting started with the tools and resources they need to start creating consistent content that will lead them to make a profit within their first 4-6 months of business. I have poured so much into this program as it is the program I wish I had when I first started out. Being a creative entrepreneur, I know what it is like feels like to be at the beginning stages and what exactly you need to grow.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My number one piece of advice for finding a mentor is to find someone who is experienced in what path you want to go down and also holds the same values as you. You want to ensure the person you are working with knows the industry very well. Realistically no one is going to know everything there is to know about an industry but you want to work with someone that knows more than the average person and can walk you through the steps to get to where you desire. Finding someone that holds the same values as you are the second part of this advice because you want to work with someone that you enjoy working with. It doesn’t matter if they are the perfect fit for you on paper. If they are not the perfect fit for you in person, you will not have the best experience working with them. I always say: work with someone you would go out in grab coffee with and end up being there for hours.
