Hi Laney, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was raised catholic and Cuban so my mom and grandma were the type of women that thought using a premade pie crust was a sin. We had family dinners every Sunday, complete with appetizers, drinks, dinner, and desserts. Growing up, cooking on Sunday was the highlight of my week. Not only was it a time to spend with family, but it was a time to learn more about my roots and family history. Sunday cooking with my grandma turned into something more- a passion to bring people together through the power of good home-cooked food. I started posting our family recipes and soon people starting asking if I was willing to sell. One random thanksgiving I decided to shoot my shot and start selling my baked goods… even if I only had one sale. The business took off and here I am
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I am a self-taught baker who actually got a degree in exercise science and nutrition. I knew the health behind food, but the techniques and recipes were things I only learned from family. Being a self-taught, or family taught, baker is hard. I never got a crash course on how to design and price cakes. I have relied a ton on masterclasses and watching YouTube videos to perfect my skills. not to mention the hours I spend working on skills, exacerbated by the fact that I don’t have a teacher or mentor to pinpoint exactly what I’m doing wrong.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a self-taught baker that sells only original and family recipes. I make absolutely everything from scratch, from our vanilla extract (6 months to make) to our homemade pumpkin purée. We use high-quality ingredients, such as kerry gold butter, in all of our products and strive to provide the most flavorful and unique culinary experiences. From custom cakes to event catering, we provide customers with a personalized menu specifically catered to their needs. Some of our best sellers are our homemade loaf breads, 3 tier cakes, and loaded cookies.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
During covid, I’ve learned that safety and customer satisfaction are top priority. In these troubling times, we’ve made sure to go above and beyond concerning safety and sanitation, including employees wearing masks, to ensure all customers feel safe and comfortable with our products.
