Exploring Life & Business with Randy Ojeda of Randy Ojeda Law

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Ojeda

Hi Randy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a deep love for music, but my path into the industry has been anything but traditional. I started by attending law school at Loyola University Chicago, focusing on entertainment law with the goal of helping artists navigate the complexities of the music business. After graduating, I found myself drawn even deeper into the industry—not just as an attorney, but as an artist manager.

Co-founding Cigar City Management allowed me to work directly with musicians, helping them build their careers, develop their sound, and navigate the business side of the industry. Managing artists gave me invaluable insight into the challenges they face and reinforced how important it is for musicians to have strong legal and business support.

Over time, I shifted my focus back to my legal roots, launching my firm, Randy Ojeda Law. Now, I work with musicians, songwriters, labels, and other creatives, ensuring they have the legal protection and business guidance they need to thrive.

At the end of the day, my goal has always been the same—helping artists succeed on their own terms by equipping them with the knowledge and resources to take control of their careers.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—starting and growing a law practice in the music industry comes with its own unique challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was building trust and credibility as an independent attorney. Many artists and industry professionals are used to working with larger firms or attorneys with decades of experience, so breaking through as a newer, independent lawyer required persistence. I had to prove that not only did I understand the law, but I also had real-world industry experience that could help artists in ways other attorneys might not.

Another challenge was educating artists on why legal guidance is essential. Many musicians don’t realize they need a lawyer until they’re already in a bad deal or facing a dispute. I’ve had to do a lot of proactive outreach—through my practice, my podcast, and even social media—to make sure artists understand the importance of protecting their work before problems arise.

Running a law practice is also very different from traditional legal work. Beyond handling contracts and negotiations, I’ve had to build my business from the ground up, manage client relationships, and constantly stay on top of changes in the industry. It’s been a learning process, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Despite the challenges, I find it incredibly rewarding to help artists take control of their careers and avoid the legal pitfalls that have hurt so many musicians in the past. The road hasn’t always been smooth, but every challenge has reinforced why I do this work—because artists deserve to be protected, informed, and empowered.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My law practice, Randy Ojeda Law, is dedicated to helping musicians, songwriters, producers, labels, and other creatives navigate the legal side of the music industry. I focus on entertainment law, handling everything from contract negotiation and review to copyright and trademark protection, business structuring, and dispute resolution.

What sets my practice apart is that I’m not just a lawyer—I’ve been deeply involved in the industry as an artist manager, A&R, and musician. I understand the struggles artists face, not just from a legal standpoint, but from a creative and business perspective as well. That real-world experience allows me to offer legal advice that is both practical and artist-friendly. My goal isn’t just to draft contracts—I want to help artists make informed decisions that protect their work and allow them to build long-term careers on their own terms.

One of the things I’m most proud of is how my practice focuses on education and empowerment. Too often, artists sign bad deals simply because they don’t know any better. That’s why I spend time breaking things down in a way that’s easy to understand, whether it’s through one-on-one consultations, social media, or my podcast, Cigar City Radio. I recently launched a Discord community for artists where they can connect, ask questions, and learn more about the business side of music in a supportive environment.

Ultimately, my brand is about advocacy, transparency, and artist-first legal services. I want readers to know that whether they’re signing their first contract, protecting their name, or resolving a legal dispute, they don’t have to go it alone. My firm is here to help them navigate the complexities of the music industry and ensure they are protected every step of the way.

What does success mean to you?
For me, success isn’t just about accolades—it’s about impact. I define success by how many artists I’ve been able to help protect their rights, make informed decisions, and build sustainable careers on their own terms. If a musician walks away from working with me feeling more empowered, confident, and in control of their career, that’s a win.

Success also means staying true to my values. The music industry can be unpredictable, and it’s easy to get caught up in chasing trends or short-term gains. But my focus has always been on advocacy, education, and transparency—helping artists understand the business, avoid bad deals, and make choices that serve their long-term interests. If I can continue doing that while growing my practice, that’s success to me.

On a personal level, success means having the freedom to do work I’m passionate about, collaborate with artists I believe in, and make a positive impact in the industry. As long as I’m achieving those things, I consider myself successful.
