Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan and Joshua Liburd.
Hi Jordan and Joshua, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, my brother and I have always wanted to start our own business. Growing up, we watched our parents run their own small businesses, which had a huge impact on our lives. It took a while to come up with a business idea that we thought was unique and creative, but finally, in February 2019, at the ages of 9 and 11, we started our very own business! We’ve always loved being artistic and creative, so we decided to make our own custom crayons. We started by making crayons shaped like Lego bricks and hearts, and now we have almost 20 different crayon sets. We make crayons in different shapes and characters, along with our popular rainbow name crayons.
Like many other kids, we both have multiple food allergies, so creating a product that all kids could enjoy was very important to us. We hope that our crayons can be used as small treats instead of food incentives often used as rewards and prizes. We recently started using our platform to spread awareness of food allergies because we want people to know that having food allergies is a big deal. Something as small as posting a food allergy tip on our page could save someone’s life. We also donate a portion of all proceeds to support food allergy education and awareness.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Things got a little rocky when COVID-19 hit last year. We were selling our crayons at vending events, but these got cancelled due to the pandemic. So for a while, we focused on getting used to virtual school and all of the other changes that were happening in our lives. This made us change the way we sold our crayons. With the help of our mom, we built a website and focused on selling our crayons online and building our social media presence.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about JL Fun Colorz?
JL Fun Colorz is a custom crayon business that we started two years ago when we were only 9 and 11 years old. Even though we are kids, we enjoy running our own business and being CEOs. We are very proud of our accomplishments and hope to inspire other kids to start their own businesses.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
In the future we plan to start a nonprofit organization that will help to raise awareness about kids with food allergies as well as helping underprivileged kids.
