Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Tavlin.
Hi Scott, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was about to enter my senior year at USF and I was struggling to discover what career was meant for me. I knew I loved interacting with people and entertaining on stage from my experience as an orientation, but I didn’t think I could turn that into a career… until I walked into the college radio station, Bulls Radio.
I started my own show with my best friend and I LOVED IT. Then in one of my media classes, my professor told me there was a hiring event with HOT 101.5 to work on their promotions team. I showed up in a suit, shared my passion, and walked out hired.
While working on the promotions team, I would take every opportunity there was to talk with the “On-Air Personalities” and I would share my dream of hosting my own show one day. Well, one day, I met, at the time, the host of HOT 101.5 named Miguel and he loved my passion and allowed me to shadow the Miguel and Holly Show. I was AMAZED.
I just kept showing up every morning to shadow til they started giving me little tasks to do. It led to me eventually a producer. I’d write raps for the show, go interview people on the street, even at one point become the human piñata, anything to be entertaining! Three years later I was finally hired to be an On-Air Personality and Full Time Producer for Hot101.5.
Then, about a year later, the morning show spot opened after Miguel and Holly left Hot101.5 and I stepped right up and fought to show our company that even though I’m young, I’m ready! And that is when Scotty and Sam in the Morning were born. Here we are today, two people passionate and ready to be Tampa Bay’s new morning show!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely NOT! Radio is a struggle right from the beginning because you start out making very little money. So while I was balancing graduating from USF, I was also waking up at 3 am to make it to the radio station, and then I’d head back to class by 11 am to make sure I finished on time.
Then after graduating and grinding to prove I have what it takes, life through another curve ball that I never thought was possible. My mom, who was my biggest supporter, the one who pushed me to follow this dream, passed away before my 24th birthday.
This has become the hardest moment of my entire life because the one who supported me through every step of the way was no longer there. But it has made me work harder to make sure I not only prove myself right in knowing I can make this dream a reality, but I want to prove her right as well as she watches me from above!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I host my own morning show on HOT 101.5! It’s Scotty and Sam in the morning! We specialize in content creation! Our job is to make your mornings better. We bring personal stories from our lives to connect with other to make sure our listeners don’t feel so alone.
We also play games, do plenty of ridiculous bits and have a lot of fun to make you life and forget about the stress of life for a little bit. I believe what sets us apart from others in this profession is the fact we truly LOVE our listeners.
We always are looking for ways for us to get into the community and do things all together. We just competed in the Extreme Mud Wars with some of our listeners, as well as we hosted a beach cleanup with some of our listeners. We are and try to be right there with our community, not just hidden in our studio.
My plan now is to become one of the biggest morning shows in Tampa Bay. I want to be the show here that people turn to for positivity, for inspiration, for laughs and drama.
I would like to have a positive impact on as many people as possible. So that means one day I would like to make our show a national show!
