Daily Inspiration: Meet Javier Ortiz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Javier Ortiz.

Hi Javier, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?

Growing up across Florida with a single mother working as an apartment leasing consultant, we got to live where she worked for free, though we actually moved a lot. Due to random changes in management and unfair work practices, we ended up relocating at least once a year, sometimes twice. This led me to not have any childhood friends and have to endure the awkwardness of being in a new school every year.

When we moved to Tampa, my mother made it a point to keep me in the same school for my high school years, even though we still moved around Tampa a few times. I was gifted a digital point and shoot camera and signed up for a digital photography class where I would mostly take pictures of dead flowers and cemeteries. In college, film photography was the first course I enrolled in. I studied and practiced black and white film development in the darkroom for four years until I got my first DSLR.

Shortly after that, I went on a photographic road trip around the United States with my best friend from high school – visited 20 states in 1 month. It was this trip that galvanized us both to continue traveling and capturing the world to inspire others and create dynamic imagery that illustrates the perpetual beauty in humans and nature. Since then, I’ve explored most of North America’s national parks and natural wonders and backpacked over a dozen countries across Europe and Central America. I live to conquer doubt and inspire the soul to triumph over anxiety as bliss is just on the other side of fear.

Now, I’m an adventurous filmmaker, video producer, travel photographer, creative editor, and professional drone pilot based in Seattle, WA; although I travel back to Tampa, FL seasonally for work and to visit my mom.

In my commercial work, I utilize my cinematic techniques to create content specializing in photography and videography for nature-focused and eco-mindful tourism brands, hotels, events, music + art festivals, and more along with my impressive drone work.

My hope is to motivate and inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and explore the world beyond their immediate surroundings; to travel, create, connect with the Earth and its eclectic cultures/peoples, empathize with every living being, and follow the visions that bring you joy.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?

In Tampa, I practiced many different fields of photography and videography, but I found myself feeling most passionate when I was traveling. It wasn’t until I got my first drone in 2020 that I really saw how far my craft could take me. I started to work for tourism brands across the US and Costa Rica and moved to Seattle in 2021.

In 2019, I was robbed in Barcelona on the first day of Summer long backpacking trip across Europe. I lost my passport, cash, debit card, ID, camera, hard drive, and more. This set me back professionally but liberated me spiritually. I let go of my “agenda” to shoot and work multiple opportunities around Europe and fully embraced what originally brought me there in the first place – the passion of connecting with other people and cultures authentically.

Later that Fall, I returned to Europe for another backpacking trip with my best friend and started the trip by getting debit card hacked and most of my money stolen, again, so that was fun… Still, that trip ended up being another amazing journey exploring Paris, Amsterdam, Switzerland, and Italy.

Of course, the 2020 pandemic was a huge setback but had a similar effect on my personal journey. I reconnected with myself, my partner, and my family and focused on what brought me joy and how I could spread more joy and connection in the world.

In early 2021 I had to unsuspectingly relocate with short notice. I ended up moving to Costa Rica for three months and was immensely humbled by nature and the relaxed flow of life in Costa Rica; La Pura Vida.

It took me six months to find a worthwhile job in Seattle that I was passionate about. In those first six months, my relationship with my partner ended up falling apart. Now I’ve reconnected with myself, and my passion for life, and am extremely excited for the year ahead as I plan to return to Spain and Portugal for the first time since 2019. I’ll be working in Barcelona for a few weeks then road tripping around Spain and Portugal for a month 🙂

For now, I’m working on releasing a new video series. Symphonic Cinema is an 8mm vintage film travel series following my adventures through multiple countries, scored along with some fun and funky tunes. I’m looking forward to finally sharing the footage I created in Mexico, Italy, Switzerland, and more through a playful lens. I bring authenticity and compassion to every project. I like to work with transparent humans who have a mission to spread joy across Earth.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
